Vintage watch guys- old Omega?

I like the basic look of these watches and want to get in cheap on a vintage automatic watch. However, I know nothing about any of it. Here are two I'm watching. Ebay bad? Omega wrong? Vintage bad? Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

I love the style of that Seamaster... I'm no "watch guy" but for a watch that is supposedly just serviced, cleaned and oiled, there still seems to be a good bit of grime in it.

Lots of cheap vintage stuff shows up on TimeZone.com. I love some of the vintage Breitlings and Sinns. Be prepared to pay big money, though, for service or overhaul. I think most of the major brands have operations in the US for this stuff. But not all of them.

Be very wary of fakes, especially if it purports to be an expensive brand (Omega) for $100. Hang out at the watch forums and learn how to tell a fake before blowing much money.

Take some pictures of it against various Porsche backdrops. I'd like to see it laying on your wheels, then in the tailpipe, maybe even draped over the shift knob.

Damn you! Do NOT give me this kind of temptation! It could override my cheap nature.

Probably not expensive by nice watch standards, but more than I want to spend - $1500ish. Just what I would want though.

The Sinn is a very nice watch and so far have not seen any fakes of them out on the market. Would love to find one for this years Christmas...

I have the Sinn U2 on a bracelet and am lusting after a 756. Their US distributor, Watch Buys, is having a private showing in SF in late Oct. when I just happen to be there that day. So I am going! BTW, the German eBay site has AWESOME watches, way, way better than the American site. They even have an all black Breitling Hercules on there now, which is now discontinued and was never available in black in the US.

I thought the 756 looked just like that. Maybe it is the 356 I'm after.

It's a 756 on a 356, Rennlist style. Get it?

Best,

Kurt

The Sinn I posted a few lines up is a 356 taken off TimeZone.

Read an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal today about the used watch market.

Apparently, several makers (Omega is the one they focused on) are "secretly" bidding up their brand of watches in big auctions, to give them more "cache." A 50's Omega sold for something like $300,000 at a recent auction (don't remember the exact number, but it was well into 6 figures and a record for an Omega), then it was made public that the bidder was actually the Omega company itself.

I think the old Omegas are very fine mechanical watches. Omega kinda ruined their image by making some cheaper quartz stuff in the 80s. But I really like their mechanical watches from their heydays, in the 50s/60s/70s. I love their style.

That watch looks the goods at the price. Seller says its an original dial- it might not be, its too good. I have a couple of 50's seamasters- you take your chances. Like all old things they can be expensive xive to service, but I think they are worth presevrving myself. That one looks mid late 60's to me. Go for it. That will sell for $200-300. To get equivalent quality in todays mech watches costs much much more.

I'm positive that's a 7 series, probably a 756 or a Diapial.

Here's a 356 I just found on TimeZone.

Bob did indeed post a 356 - the same picture as you posted, in fact. I think the 356 car I posted has warped your brain.

Best,

Kurt
