Shooting range

I was thinking of taking my wife out to a local shooting range to teach her how to use firearms properly and safely. Although i know how to use and fire weapons, i'm not that experienced. I've fired quite a few shotguns on quite a few occasions, and a semi automatic rifle once. Anyhow is it common for shooting ranges to hold classes that teach firearm safety and usage with various firearms? I figure we could both take the class and i could probably learn a thing or two as well.

You're in Cruces? I'm in Cruces! (Not this month, however). What part of town?

As to shooting classes, contact the guys over at Custom Cartridge Co. on S. Main,(http://www.customcartridgecompany.com). Very nice folk, very helpful. Not sure if they instruct, but they will know someone who will.

See you in January '08, neighbor.

wow you got married???

hey, shooting ranges are friendly places. most guys there are willing to help. growing up, in el paso, i just ran out to the desert and home schooled myself. safety first, but there is huge fun in knocking over cans.

cliff
i will be there over the t-day holidays. let me know if you want to shoot some. i should have some time between great gorditas from little diner, and chili rellenos from chopes! mmmm, cattlemen's steaks......mmmmm.

Is Cattlemen's that good? I drove by there but it looked a little run-down. I ended up at Cattle Baron and wasn't impressed. What is that big steakhouse on I-10 headed towards El Paso? Any good?

Sorry for the hi-jack. You don't run into too many "homies" around these parts...

I live right now on campus at NMSU with my wife. My second home/workshop is my parents house who live off rt70 up past Onate high school.
I think your referring to Texas Roadhouse or maybe Texas Steakhouse. I've heard it was OK, but never been there myself. Personally i miss restaurants like Jonny Carinos and Senses do Brazil, however both have closed down . Fortunately i still have greek food at Tiffany's restaurant (I love gyros and tzitziki sauce).
I understand the comment on the "homies", definitely not often you find people from our area of the desert on PPOT.
Yes i got married legally in May of 2006 and ceremoniously in July of 2006.

And as far as the thread topic, i guess maybe i could look into getting an inexpensive rifle to teach her (i love going into walmart and buying ammo with a driver's license). For a hand gun lesson i'll see what our local range has to offer, never been to custom cartridge so i'll have to check them out.

Cool. I have a home downtown and one out in Dripping Springs (6 mi. from NMSU toward the Organs).

What is the purpose for teaching your wife to shoot? Self defense or sport? If for self-defense, I'd forget about the rifle idea and get a handgun instead.

Because she has zero experience and zero knowledge on using guns. In my opinion it's the type of experience that is very valuable and very important to have, even if you only do it once. My generation i think has the idea that it's as easy as point and shoot because of video games, and real guns aren't quite that perfect in trajectory path. So it's good to know how to use one properly, safely, and make the proper aiming adjustments between each shot. Plus i actually do like shooting once in awhile..........

For the chain steakhouses in Texas, go with Saltgrass.

Check the pin ups at the local range, or at a local firearms dealer. You might also look up a CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) instructor and see if they also have basic pistol safety courses.

http://www.dps.nm.org/lawEnforcement/ccw/ccwInstructors.php

I checked the NRA website, and there do not appear to be regular courses in New Mexico.

Any real range of sorts should have a beginner class, intermediate, concealed carry etc. Most of the people at the range are pretty cool; what you need to watch for is the occasional individual that is lax with muzzle control (i.e. fiddling with his handgun and his barrel is aimed at your stall instead of downrange)- those folks get a polite but stern warning from me once and only once...after that you ask for them to be removed from the range.

The range near me has a variety of different handguns to rent, you might start your wife with a .22 and something that fits her hand. Good idea to learn safe practices and marksmanship first- while its cool to let her experience a .45 or .357, that can sometimes have the opposite effect of what you're after.

i am pretty competent with a handgun. i would go out in some safe area of the desert and rattle off a couple hundred rounds with a .22. i think i can teach the basics without getting anyone shot in the foot. for a total rook, a gun range can be kinda intimidating. water balloons, cans, thing that give visual satisfaction is alot better than a bunch of holes in paper. (besides they will be all over the place).

cattlemen's is very good. cheap (compared to the bay area) and they make a beotching margarita on the rocks...I-10 steakhouse?? dunno. for more meaty goodness, there is billy crews, and StateLine. the smoked primerib at stateline is GREAT!

Is "Stateline" on the border (NM/TX)? That might be the place I've seen on the side of I-10...

Learning to properly handle weapons starts with the simple notion, NEVER NEVER give your wife a gun, let alone teach her how to shoot it.

But if you must, its quite simple...never point the gun at anything you do not intend to shoot, that simple.

you cant see stateline from I-10. i think your are seeing some knockoff, cattleman's land and cattle company. they are basically a burger joint.

as far as women shooting. what is the prob? you dont want them shooting you? i think everyone should be able to shoot. that way, you can buy all the firearms you want. if she does go berzerk, the trick is to be able to "shoot better".
