Letter from the labor union thugs.

My 16 year old son will be fired in seven days unless he agrees to pay for union representation. This is the the very same union that has secured for him a minimum wage job with NO BENEFITS. His employer pays him the legal minimum required by law. For my son, the value of union representation is easily calculated; It's a negative $238.50 and $36/month.

Finding a new non-union job should be pretty easy for him.

IMO That, in a nutshell, is why unions suck.
I had the sme thing with my first job: 12 hours a week, $.10 over the min wage, and union dues that took half my cheque.
I can understand if they were protecting me from a hazardous situation (like mining or heavy equipment) , but I was putting lettuce on ice beds at the grocery store

This is a prime example of what happens when lawyers get involved......

Hoot! The more things change, the more they stay the same. I once worked in two lumber mills...days shift in one, "swing" in another. Both jobs were "green chain"...that meant pulling raw, just out of the dimension saw lumber off the "chain", stacking your designated size. Being a young punk, I was placed at the end of the chain in both jobs. Meaning, you had the ***** job of pulling and assorting, then stacking the lumber the guys ahead of you on the chain (conveyor belt...metal links, like a bicycle chain) missed. This involved sizes from 2x4 to 10X10...

About mid August, the union went out on strike. I hadn't done the job long enough to "join". Didn't want to join. I was running all over the mill yard, trying to avoid the union representative. After all, I was making $2.12 per hour. Big money then.

They called, a week later. Strike settled...all I had to do was return to that torture, and I'd make $2.19 per hour!

Thrilling as the offer was, I decided to pass, and to play a couple of weeks before returning to school.

I've never had the urge to pull green chain since. Rule number one of that job is to turn brain off...become a robot.

So, in many ways, I sympathize with union guys...GAWD! To do the same backbreaking job, year after year, your wages set by union bosses? Jesus!

I missed something. Where and how exactly did lawyers get involved in this?

Like you, I do not live in a "right-to-work" state. Lawyers have successfully defended the labor unions right to deny employment to anyone who refuses to pay union dues.

The thing to do, of course is to simply let them fire him. No reason he can't have some fun with them first, though. Have him ask for a notorized copy of the union membership rules in, say, Farsi or something. Be creative. Have fun. Make 'em work for it.

Not a damn thing. That's the funny part.

The courtesy clerks have enjoyed union representation for more than 20 years. In that time they have secured a labor contract for minimum wage. In other words, it would be illegal for them to pay my son less than he earns now.

Look at the union's letterhead; "One vision - one voice - one union!" What a joke.

I would like to hear from someone that has union blood and get their take on this. There has to be another side to the story, after all, between ***** and p!ss we are born. Then again, this could be a still birth.

You'll never see a news story about something like this because newsworkers, cameramen, etc. are union members too!!!

I really wonder if the union will actually force the store to fire him or if it's just an idle threat. My guess is that there is a lot of paperwork involved and it could take weeks. I'd wait it out and call their bluff.

Communist thugs...

I am dropping my membership in my national and state professional associations for a year in protest of the requirement that I be a member of the OPEIU. Been a member almost 20 years.

It is only $110 of the $1800 I sent them each year since moving to California, but it is the priciple of the thing to me. I even wrote the union to ask them not to send the newsletter to me, and some union guy called trying to lease me advertising space on some bulletin board in a union clubhouse.

This entire state is run by unions, which partially explains how the status of the education, healthcare and economy here have so precipitously fallen

Another reason unions & liberals want more "legal illegals". Bigger base, pure & simple.

In the Grocery Biz there is a thing called Shrinkage. If U know how to work that right you could wind up paying cash for a house in Huntington Harbor...one with its own boat dock.
