Professor Komlos said the importance of the increase in obesity has been recognised, but less attention has been paid to what height can tell scientists about a nation's health.

Professor Komlos said access to healthcare and a welfare state, the quality of care given to pregnant women and babies, social status and access to a balanced diet all influenced height.

He said the Dutch advantage was probably due to providing the "world's best" pre and post-natal care.

In contrast, around 40 million Americans have no health insurance.

Professor Komlos told BBC News Online: "The reasons behind this height difference are a big mystery."

But he said it was likely there were social, economic and medical differences between Europe and America.

"We think it could be linked to factors such as the better medical attention available in western and northern European countries, and better access to a welfare state.

"There is also a more even distribution of income in western and northern Europe."

This is a load of crap. Those of Dutch or other northern European ancestry are just as tall - or 99% as tall as their distant relations in Europe.

But in total - we just have a lot more folks from places where people are shorter, because of their genes - not because of diet or healthcare.

WHAT?! That is one of the stupidest things I have ever read. I'm not shocked that it came from a professor. So by his reasoning, all rich men from good families should be 6'5".

I suspect the Dutch are just screwing up the stats all on their own. The reason the Dutch are so tall is simple, its because Holland is below sea level and only the tall will survive the potential risk of flooding!

i lived there for 6 years, and i can assure you , they have some tall walking trees over there, i'm 180 cm, which is a good average in most countries
but in our office full of expacts, you could always spot the Dutchie, all you had to do was look at the size of the guys in the room, and they would stick out , litterally...

sure they have some smaller variants too, but the average is way higher
