plasma v. lcd revisted

Well, due to an impeding career shift I decided it was time to upgrade from an old crt to widescreen/hd tv. I don't have a very large room so I was looking at 32/37" LCD. While everyone is screaming 1080p, it seems the reality is that especially in a smaller size like that, 720p is just fine, especially since I'll be mostly watching SD DVDs. The main thing I want is 16x9 native (I hate 4x3) and the ability to display 1080i video I shoot.

I was all set to go LCD (Sharp) but I got some advice at one of the stores to consider plasma. The argument being that it is a bit warmer and "film" like. I have to admit that it seemed to be the case. Of course the smallest you can go is 42" and it also is 1024x768 native. But $1200 for a Panasonic unit seemed like a reasonable deal.

At any rate, got it home (helps to know a cute woman with a truck) and it is big. Maybe too big. It also does not have direct DVI connection so using it as a secondary computer display isn't an option like it would be with an LCD (although I guess you can do DVI-HDMI). The other option I'm still considering is a 32" Sharp 720p box as they are under $1K.

So did anyone else go plasma instead of lcd recently?

The two most notable differences are the quality levels in daylight versus darkness. Bright room- LCD. Dark room- Plasma. I have LCD, and at night when watching dark movie scenes, its frustrating. But on a bright day, I can watch stuff no problem.

I'm considering a new TV that takes up less space. I recently asked two people that deal with TVs as part of their job. One said LCD hands down. The other said LCD up to 40" or so, plasma for over 40".

YMMV.

my living room is dark all the time. It faces east and I have dark drapes and tree coverage, so glare and ambient light are not issues at all. From what I understand glare can be a problem with most plasma displays, although the slightly higher priced version of this Panasonic model has a coated screen.

The only problem will be when I move in 6 months or so...never sure what the room will be like. Still pondering switching to a smaller LCD but I have to admit that the more I watch it the more I get used to the big screen. With viewing position about 7-8' away, 42" evidently is about optimal. Just seems huge compared to the 26" crt it replaced.

I have an older HD screen that has an HDMI-in and I just use a simple DVI-HDMI cable I picked up for about $30 and it works great for the computer.

How about rear projection? I have been debating for quite a while and have settled on an LCD. It goes in the corner so there is plenty of room for the rear projection type and they are less money. Comments?

I just got around to messing with the settings. I just popped Kung Fu Hustle in the dvd player and switched to "cinema" color setting. Good gawd, it is just gorgeous. I think I'll learn to live with the extra size...

Rear projection seems to be dying out at this point. Plasma and LCD are battling and the current conventional wisdom is that above 42" Plasma is still best, but below the more expensive LCD are the way to go. It also depends on ambient light (as Ramm said). To my eye the plasma looks a bit warmer and less blotchy. I have to admit that I'm not watching HD sports, so ymmv. It also seems that plasma handles quick motion better, but LCD is catching up. Sony now has a 120hz refresh that may make a difference to your eyes.

But it came down to a 37" LCD 720p unit (Sharp) vs. a 42" plasma 720p (Panasonic). for the same price. Could have found it cheaper online but I want the choice of taking it back if it doesn't really send me.

The one that really looked gorgeous was a 1080p Pano 50" plasma. Beautiful...

I just got a 52" Sharp Aquos LCD, my family room is bright with lots of ambient and sun light. So far so good, could not wait to play some COD4 on the Xbox on this puppy

I've got a 62' 1080p Toshiba DLP & couldn't be happier, $1700 delivered. IMHO, in larger sizes, the only thing better is the $8k plus, Pioneer Elite & Hitatchi Director's Edition type plasmas.

LCD for video games, Plasma for larger size for the money.
