Who gives a little kid something they can gobble down anyway. I guess if the blocks are chinese, you have the lead thing still, but at least they can't swallow them, just chew 'em a bit.

Yes I have raised kids and did not give them stuff they could be choking on.

WTF!? Is it that ******* impossible to be a responsible parent and not let your kid eat the little beads from their arts and crafts project? I am sorry if that sounds harsh, but come on. Do you let a kid play with a permanent marker? No, but you can have markers, knives, even guns and children in the same residence and they are not necessarily going to shoot or stab any one, and will not write **** on the baseboard in magic marker unless you let them.

100% agreed. What does it matter if someone has kids or not. Common sense. You don't give them stuff they can swallow or choke on. Even I know that.

I'm just ******* sick of this! I would say boycott all products from China NOW, but try going into Toys'r'us and find something NOT made in China, good luck I've tried.


It's time for the Toy Companies to say that's enough and pull out of China, and yes I know you'll say the price will skyrocket, but China is not the only game in town that has cheap labour.

And yes I have two 4 year olds that really wanted those aquadoddles. I said no before this even happened.

The product does not contain a date rape drug. It contains a chemical that has a similar effect.

Still a scary proposition as I'm sure the product will now be used for "other" purposes.

My 7 year old daughter has them or I should say "had" them until this morning.

My question is- what is the purpose of the coating, and are there other options available for this coating? I know this data would be hard to find. I am just wondering if it was an unknown, or if there were other more established coating options that were avoided as a means of saving $.

The toy has proved extremely popular in both countries. In 2007, Bindeez was named Australia's Toy of the Year.

The toy consists of hundreds of brightly-coloured beads that can be arranged into a piece of art and sprayed with water to set.

The beads are meant to be coated in a non-toxic glue, but a batch in Australia was found to be covered with a substance that did not match the approved formula.

In Australia, two children in New South Wales and one child in Queensland have been hospitalised in the past two weeks after swallowing the beads.

All three have now recovered, but all of the country's states and territories have now banned the toy.

In the US, two children were affected, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned. They slipped into comas, but later recovered.

About 4.2 million units of the toy will be recalled in the US, officials said, and about one million in Australia.

Australian-based manufacturer Moose Enterprises said the toys were made at a factory in southern China's Guangdong province.

The firm said Bindeez beads would in future be covered with a "foul-tasting ingredient" to try to ensure children would not eat them.

The fair trading minister in Australia's New South Wales, Linda Burney, said an investigation was under way to determine how batches of the Chinese-made beads failed to match the approved formula.

Well there is a plasticizer that is similar in structure to what the Chinese used differing in the carbon chain length. 1,5 pentanediol is a resin forming plasticizer, but the toy manufacturer used 1,4 butanediol that converts to GHB in the gut, I think. And GHB IS a narcotic. Somebody in the manufacturer's QC department really pharked up.
