Acid-etching metal foils
anyone here have experience "cutting out" complex shapes in metal foils using an acid-etching technique?
Our waterjet cutter, who did an excellent job with 1/4 inch Aluminum sheet, says he can't cut multiple layers of foil. Any ideas on how I can make these in production quantities using various foils? ![]()

I would try using a standard UV sensitive photo-resist.
Basically, you would coat your foil with a photo-resist film, and allow it to dry. Next, place the template over the top of the foil, and expose it to a UV light source. A solvent is then used to wash away the resist that has been exposed to the light. Once the solvent is removed, a light acid mixture can be used to disolve the remaining foil. Lastly, you use another solvent to clean your foil piece. All in all it is similar to a circuit board construction. If you need more details, I think I have a catalog somewhere around here with all the materials you would need. Hope it helps! -Nick

hi Nick,
that is exactly what I want to do, thank you. I'll google around and see what I can find for experimentation. BTW, do you need a set of Lotus hubcaps? I've got a set I found recently in storage from a 66 Elan.
