Jerry Seinfeld: Unfunny?

Having suffered through "Bee Movie" this past weekend as well as the unending media blitz leading up to its release, I have come away with the distinct impression that Jerry Seinfeld is not terribly funny.

I was always a fan of the "Seinfeld" show and thought that Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David were truly equal partners in its creation. But having seen what brought Jerry Seinfeld out of his ten year, self-imposed retirement, I can only conclude that there isn't much there.

Maybe Larry David really carried Jerry Seinfeld all those years. Just look at "Curb Your Enthusiasm" which shows all the creativity that I once attributed to Jerry Seinfeld.

I know it's probably not fair to judge an artist on one work, but it's hard for me to believe that "Bee Movie" came from the same mind that created "Seinfeld."

I saw Jerry do stand up comedy before his tv show - seriously funny stuff. Jerry takes himself way to seriously these days.

The Seinfeld show had a fantastic mix - he was the weakest. The guests were the best part.

I'm not expecting much from Bee Movie - I won't be let down.

Agree with Lube- Seinfeld was by far the weakest on his show.

As is often the case with the straight man role.

No need to get defensive.

Guys, take it easy. Some of you may not know this, but dd74 is Jerry Seinfeld.

I still think you're funny, Jerry

I've never found Jerry Seinfeld funny. He just annoys me.

I never really liked Seinfeld (the show), but he wrote an article in Automobile Magazine a few years ago on the Carrera GT that I thought was genious. (Both funny and insightful.)

sammyg2 11-05-2007 09:48 AM

Shhhhh! Jerry hangs out here all the time.

Be nice Jerry is one of US.

He's up and down, like most truly funny people. I suspect without knowing that he forced this movie through w/o a lot of vetting/bouncing ideas with other bright, funny people. The pre-release hype included comments by (allegedly) close colleagues of his that if he wants to do a shtick, he just does it, regardless of the comments/concerns of others.

If you believe you're infallible, you're gonna flop sooner or later, no matter how bright/funny/intelligent you are.

I first saw him on the Rodney Dangerfield Young Comedians Special -- had to be in the mid-80s. He was funny then, and he's still funny. I think his wit just exceeded his grasp on this one.

Seinfeld is the best sitcom ever (call me Jerry).:D

Best sitcom ever, and his stand-up is pretty damn good. But, from all I've heard, Bee movie is crap. Even worse, every time I see Jerry on TV I like him a little less. He's just so damn arrogant. The way he name-drops and speaks of himself just drives me crazy. The man has accomplished a lot in the entertainment business, and is about the ultimate Porsche guy, but get a grip on yourself.

I think that by declaring that dd . . .Jerry Seinfeld is not funny or smart you automatically elevate your status as better than him.

. . .well, at you're least better than those who kiss his ass because he has money. --right?

--just a shallow observation....

Dueller 11-05-2007 10:01 AM

I saw him on an HBO special that was honoring him as comedian of the decade or other such nonsense, and he was very funny with much of his humor self depricating. He was really great when he goobed the the award itself as self agrandizing in his parody of an acceptance speech .

To be honest, I was probably too immature to "get" Seinfeld when it was on...and haven't watched the re-runs.

I probably won't watch Bee Movie either because I'm pretty burned out on animated flicks.

What is the movie rated? G? Do younger kids love it? If so, it hit its mark. Who cares what a bunch of Porsche-snobs think as long as their kids watch it...

Something that other writers can't help with is delivery. There are lots of moments in Seinfeld where the delivery, the facial expression, the timing etc. could make or break the joke. Jerry clearly got this. Its something that I don't think can be taught.

rammstein 11-05-2007 10:07 AM

I have been enjoying animated films at home lately, as they are a great test medium for new video equipment. Hopefully this movie has some good stuff for that. I heard cars is a good blu-ray tester too.

George was my man. I'd break out laughing just looking at him.
He was so funny!
I'm thinking about buying the entire series of Senfield that just came out.

I've got the "Friends" 10 year series and its a joy to watch, some really good writers for that show.

onewhippedpuppy 11-05-2007 10:23 AM

The reviews I have seen state that Bee Movie tries to be everything to everyone, and fails to make anyone happy. Also, the CGI is reported to be mediocre.

Not speaking from experience here, I just read a few reviews out of curiousity. From what I've read, I won't be taking my 3 year old.

I liked Seinfeld when it was on tv, but didn't start to love until after it ended. I saw Jerry's stand-up show twice in DC and have never laughed so hard in my life. True genius stuff. Then I got hooked on Curb Your Enthusiasm. That show is really an acquired taste. But after getting into it, you start watching old Seinfeld reruns with a completely different perspective. Now I think Seinfeld is just pure genius.

I won't see the Bee Movie. It looks like Jerry just needed a project and Katzenberg talked him into it. Nothing wrong with that, but I almost never go to the movies and wouldn't make an exception just because Jerry is plugging his new movie.

Now, if you want to talk seriously UNFUNNY comics, how about Gary Shandling, Kathy Griffin, Ellen DeGeneres? Why are they famous?
