Recession-proof employment

Well, it looks like we're in for a rocky ride as far as the economy goes. So, with that in mind, I'm just wondering: is there such a thing as recession-proof employment?

Are there jobs that are recession proof? At least something more formidable than a job where one might ask, "Would you like fries with that?"

Education.... or "core services" like law enforcement, medical, etc.

Certain jobs can be recession-proof for a given cycle, but then as the economy changes, they are no longer so.

Even core jobs are vulnerable if things are bad for long enough.

No kidding. Some people genuinely enjoy the work and make a good living at it.

Video Games.

When things are good people have disposable income to buy games.

When things are tight people look to entertain at home and maximize their $'ss hence they still buy games.

Entertainment is often recession-proof to a degree, but is usually far from a steady job.

Otherwise, certain forms of credit. I work in sub-prime and haven't noticed much change in customer payment habits with changes in the economy, up or down. Most of our customers are completely unaffected by things like interest rates, market shifts, currency shifts, etc. The only ones that are are those that drive trucks for a living, and even in hard times they're doing better than many of our other customers. I guess it comes down to our company being structured to expect our customers to be always in the midst of hard times.

Health care, mortuary, etc.

Construction is going to suck. Retail is going to suck. Travel is going to suck and entertainment is going to suck.

Maybe a good time to become a "credit counselor" too.

I expect fast food will do well.

Isn't sub-prime in Canada run a bit differently than the U.S. Lots of people are losing their shirts down here.

Oil will probably do well for a while too. Everything I read says it's going to $125 a barrel or higher on this run. If Hillary gets into office you can bet inflation will go through the roof too and you might see it as high as $200 in the next few years.

Good time to buy Euros and emerging markets funds.

Medical - I'm not so sure about that. Insurance, malpractice included, is killing (no pun intended) some practices.

Entertainment - one has to be deep in the system, or hooked onto a very good long-running show to resist a recession. At least that's my opinion.

Other cores such as government, teaching, fire and police, even the military might seem like better bets.

Gubmint job is best for this. And I believe the BATF is ranked as the best gov't. agency to work for. Not kidding.

Honestly, I think auto body shops must be recession proof. Since May I've been in three accidents involving a total of seven cars, six of which required bodywork. And the best body shop in my area has a good 6 mos. wait for serious Porsche restoration work. I've never been to a body shop that seemed like they weren't crazy busy.

I think law is another good bet - and I'm no great fan of lawyers.
