Tire storage for those of us without much room

For those of you with small garages, where/how do you store your tires? We just bought a second (third, if you count the P-car) car, and so now I'll have two sets of winter wheels and tires, as well as racing tires for the 911.

I was thinking about building an elevated storage shelf out of wood, then I found this on line:

http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/ttr/tire_storage_rack.jsp?TIRERACK_Qty=1

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Oh, and please, my building skills are rudimentary at best. No "just weld a thingie into a jig-a-ma-bob" or "just take a miter saw and bevel some 2 by 4s with some 1/4" galvanized reverse sinking wood screws" or something like that!

I bought a set of track wheels recently and I was told in no uncertain terms DON'T store them in the garage over winter. The cold is bad for the rubber. Of course, that begs the questions as to the rubber on the wheels mounted on the car, but still, I'll be bringing them down to the basement for winter storage.

A buddy of mine, who has more tire/wheel combos for his BMWs than I have sockets, built similar racks to the tirerack ones out of wood. If I recall correctly he used 2x2s. Pretty simple project, and you can mount it high enough on the wall to still use the space underneath.

Doesn't seem like a bad price for $129. I don't understand the don't store in the cold theory.

I've been storing my track tires in my attached garage for years now. Never had an issue -- I store them on their sides, stacked one on top of the other.

Then again, my garage never gets below freezing, since my house is a bi-level and the garage is basically half of the downstairs area. If the garage temps would dip below 32 F, then I would consider storing them elsewhere.

I agree with you, Christien, the race rubber goes in the (relatively) warm basement in the winter and crummy all-seasons go on in the car.

onewhippedpuppy, that is kind of my thought. Like I mentioned, my building skills are weak. I suppose if I built two triangles with one right angle, and mounted one side on the wall, then built a support at each angle going to the corresponding angle on the other triangle...maybe I should just keep looking for a storage rack! ;-)

That looks like a great rack for $129. At that price I wouldn't bother building one.

I suppose the price of the Tire Rack's systems isn't too bad.

I just found these:

I always store my tires and batteries in the basement, especially during the MI winters.

That's a clean garage. I thought it was his kitchen.

I just ordered two storage systems from the Tire Rack. I'll post pictures and give a review next weekend.

Oh, the RA-1s are most definitely going in the basement. The racks are for my street/snow tires (depending on the season) for our daily drivers.

One thing I have incorporated into my life - garages are for parking cars, not for storage. I rent a storage unit a few blocks from home. My garage is for the cars and bikes and all the clutter is now at the other garage. I can't believe I waited so long to do something that simplifies my life so much.

How much does that cost you? $100/month? Figure $1200 a year to keep holiday decorations and stuff you don't use that often? Really worth it? Dunno...

Thanks, I have a set I need to refinish so I can have two and need a better way to store them.

For in the garage, I always liked a pulley setup that my brother made. Raised and lowered a platform he made, had a little frame he Macgyvered together for the ropes to go through that made it so it was not tippy, you could hang from the end of it and it stayed flat.

I think if tires get too cold it does something bad to the rubber, sort of like if they get too hot they melt.

I have a metal shed out back to store garden stuff, attic space over garage and house for everything else. If I get to where I have too many cars I will rent extra space, but that is down the road a bit.

Actually, if I pay in advance for a year it's $500. It's also a write off = no brainer.
