Laptop suggestions

I am Christmas shopping for a laptop for my wife. I have read the reviews online. What do you guys suggest for less than $1000?

Thanks wise ones, David

Anything that doesn't have Vista. Call Dell and get one with XP.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1405 and it has been great. Ran me just under $900 14 months ago, and if anything they have better performance for less money now.

I bought a laptop with Vista and within a month I "upgraded" to XP. Do some research on Vista before you buy it.

+1

I have been a Microsoft certified systems engineer for almost 10 years. Number of Vista computers in my home? Zero.

I'm thinking we are looking at Windows ME level failure here.....

I don't think you can go wrong with the Toshiba Satellites. Excellent machines.

Not to hijack this thread but isn't there a limited time that MS will update/service XP? Does anyone know if SP1 for Vista is on the way?
p.s. The best laptop for your wife is the one just under your belt buckle.

+1, My wife just got a really basic Dell with XP last month. It runs great with 1GB of ram. For her needs, email, web, some word documents its perfect and at around $500 it didnt break the bank.

I think Windows ME might actually have been better. It didn't crash nearly as much.

XP will be updated until 2014 for businesses, etc. ...

I'd recommend at least looking into getting a Mac. Little more than your budget, but you can get factory refurbs for under...

I must be the only rare one that hasn't had problems with vista, on both my desktop and laptop. It's definitely a resource hog no doubt about that, but it never gives me problems.

Stop messing around with Windows. Get a Mac.

The MacBook is all you need.
Little or no virsuses, malware or adware to worry about - that's huge compared to XP.
Lots of great software built in (it's called iLife)

OS X is a great OS (especially Leopard aka OS X 10.5) and it plays perfectly well with Windows networks.

If you just want it to work, buy a Mac.

I just picked up a Dell 1521 and its really nice... It runs kind of slow but it does have Vista on it. I use it for playing DVD's and what not.

Get a refurbished white MacBook from store.apple.com. Black is fine but a bit more expensive for no good reason.

Should be around $1,000. None listed right now, but keep watching.

Refurbished Macs look, work, and are packaged just like new ones. I've bought all of my recent Macs refurb'd.

Find a nice used one on Craigslist.

I picked up a very nice $1000 Dell for my Mom for $550 - less than 1 year old and works perfectly with XP.

I bought a Toshiba Qosmio with Vista Ultimate for myself for $1000 - about a year old. I believe the guy paid close to $3000 for it. No issues with Vista - use it everyday. I actually like the OS.

Lots of used laptops out there, people buy them and then realize they don't need it.

we'll likely go the dough for a MAC to replace the five-six year old Compaq.

We've always had GREAT luck with Compaq's but wanted a 17" monitor on the laptop. LOVE the Toshiba Satellite upgraded to XP.

Ended up funding a Dell for my sister in law, she claims it is great.

Keep your registration number for your current XP machine, buy what you want with at least 1MB of ram, preferably 2MB, and upgrade back to XP. Or get the MAC, you'll love one so I hear!!

My Dell laptop has a 17" screen and its really nice for videos and watching movies out on the road. Even has a digital port for a external monitor if needed, so this one is made for entertainment.
