Painful Realizations

I'm pretty sure I'm an idiot and I left my sunglasses in a rental car I had over the weekend. So far Enterprise claims nothing was found, but I'm have difficulty accepting the fact that I just lost $400 Tag Heuer sunglasses.

Crap.

That's why I wear cheap sunglasses. If loosing a pair of $400 sunglasses is a problem for you, you probably should not be buying $400 sunglasses.

Well, I had the glasses for 6 years, it just bugs me that I was dumb enough to leave them in a rental.

Why would you spend $400 on sunglasses? Were they prescription?

When our daughter lost her Porsche Design watch, a graduation present, I then told her: "Buy a timex. When you need a pen, buy a bic". She's just one of those who loses things. My bad for buying her a $pendy watch....

I do not see what the big deal is about spending $400 on sunglasses. He had them for 6 years before he lost them. When you factor in the time of ownership, they weren't terribly expensive.

When I buy pretty much anything, I tend to get high quality stuff, and then keep it until it either does not work anymore, or I outgrow it, etc. It costs more up front, but in the long run its not much different than spending less money on 4 different or 6 different pairs of sunglasses over that 6 year period.

I think people buy $400 sunglasses so they can tell everyone they bought $400 sunglasses.

I buy $5 'safety' sunglasses at Home Depot/Lowes/Harbor Freight. They keep the sun and random crap out of my eyes, and if I break or lose them, no big deal.

I left my Blackberry on the hood of a rental car...watched it immolate itself on the pavement as I sped away. Painful.
Avis refused to cover my loss.
I bought another one and I have refused to repeat my painful realization. So far, so good.
Avis is dead to me, however.

I'm guessing it was a Pontiac Aztek?

I had at least 3 more shaves left with that razor.

Not everyone one can get away with wearing cheap sunglasses, and like Porsche stuff, bike, watches, is one of the other things that I collect. As a matter of fact, I have my very first pair of (for me at the time) high dollar sunglass on my desk, right in front of me, a pay of Ray-Bans that I got in 1982
My eyes are pretty sensitive to the sun, and I have found very few pairs of cheap glasses that work for me (that doesn't mean that all high $$$ work for me either) Point is, if you like the look & feel of something and can afford, what is wrong with buying it??

I will always buy quality when it truly makes a difference, either in utility or enjoyment. There is a difference between that and just showing off.

I have a pair of Oakleys, some cheap sunglasses for yard work, and a pair of fake Armanis that I got in NY...the Oakleys are hands down the best pair. They feel much more solid, and they let in much less sun.

That being said, lately I have been wearing the fake Armanis more lately because they are a touch more stylish then the Oaks...eventually I will get some real designer shades, but I am 19 and $300+ is a bit spendy for me (the Oaks were only $70 because I get a 40% discount from the country club i work at).

I usually choose things with the exact same philosophy.

I have a friend who builds custom cues, but I can't get myself to pull the trigger, if I still had my table maybe

I got a pair of Maui Jim? high dollar sunglasses a couple of years ago. Actually my wife got them for me. Best sunglasses I'd ever had and I collect sunglasses. 2 months after I got them my wife knocked them off the kitchen counter and they hit the tile floor. Shattered lens as they are glass. 85 bucks to replace 1 lens. 2 months later my wife jams her sunglasses in on top of mine in the sunglass holder in the car. Another shattered lens. Screw it, no more 300 dollar sunglasses for me. I must be cursed so I just wear the el cheapos.

Well, there are cheaper versions of everything. Why buy a Porsche when a Toyota will serve the same purpose?
