In practice, however, the wait times from when the petition is filed until the adult relative is able to enter the U.S. are typically on the order of 15-20 years (as of 2006). This is in addition to 5 or more years that it typically takes for the initial immigrant to obtain the U.S. citizenship.

Its much easier to just stay here illegally (millions do), and stay out of the way.

Similar situation in Sweden (and most Western European countries). We have a very large influx of refugies from former Jugoslavia. They send over the children by them selves, so the rest of the big family can join later. These kids can not be sent back according to the laws of UN (and Sweden). The government keep scattering them in groups around the country.

Currently we are expecting some twenty children at the age of 15-17 years old to be temporarily placed in our little village. These are of mostly boys and many of them have very disturbing memories and experiences from back home. We had one hundred of them fifteen years ago and all of a sudden we had to start locking up everthing. They even stole cloths hanging out to dry. Bikes, cars, furniture outside, cats, dogs.

I feel very sorry for these kids, but without a proper plan for taking care of them, the only result will be more petrol on the already growing fire of 'we and them' feeling. A very difficult issue indeed.

Raise a huge wall, guard it with military, and round up the ones here now, and send them back. Pass English-only laws and get rid of any Hispanic-related social services that cater to undocumented/illegals or whatever they're called.

If we could filter a fraction of the manpower and money being expended in SW Asia into some kind of meaningful effort on our southern border, significant change could be created. Amazing where the priorities are.

A wag friend of a friend proposes that Walmart build a series of Super Duper Walmarts smack against the border that span between our border towns and cities - customer entrance on U.S. side, employee entrance on the Mexico side - problem solved and both countries benefit economically .

Or how about the gumnt excercising their power of eminent domain and moving our military bases (we've got a lot of them in deserts now) to span those same distances along the border - that might pose a real deterrant, no?
