Best place for snow skiing & shopping?

I'm trying to plan a Februrary ski trip with the wife and looking for idea. She demands 2 things, places to shop and no crazy altitudes (she gets sick). I demand good powder and some decent black diamonds.

Ideas?

You need to go to Colorado.

She needs to go to Manhatten.

Moses is right. Aspen, maybe Vail. Breckenridge is also great for both skiing and shopping, but the highest of all.

Steamboat still represents a great value as well, and has good skiing and is the lowest elevation of 'em all.

Steamboat = 6700feet
Aspen = 7900 feet
Vail = 8200 feet
Breckenridge = 8900 feet

I don't know about the shopping as it has been awhile since I have been there, but Killington Vermont is pretty decent skiing for being on the east side of the country and the altitude is not a problem.

Holiday Valley New York is nice also and typically gets new fresh snow quite often. It is near a quaint little town called Ellicottville that has a bunch of small shops in it. Holiday Valley always has at least some blacks with moguls and I really like it due it's many black runs that are serviced by many different lifts. Some of the main feeder lifts are typically busy on busy weekends and holidays, but many of the two place llifts serving some of the black diamonds only, typically have no lines whatsoever.

you could try Santa Fe, NM
not a huge ski area but close to town and when they have snow it is very good. should have some good amounts by February. the shopping would be pretty good too. if she wants to check out galleries too Santa Fe blows any ski town away for places to spend time

Taos,NM would be great too. skiing there is amazing and if they still don't allow snowboards, it will be you and the rest of the double planker crowd. plenty of shops there and plenty of good art there too.

the food in Santa Fe is amazing...not your typical TEX/MEX.
my folks live there and i spend a week there every thanksgiving getting my green chili fix.
if you are a chilihead the official state question is "Green or Red?"
official answer "Christmas!"

I've been to Vermont when I was much younger, very nice powder.

I think the elevation in Colorado will make her puke the whole time which is no fun.

I was actually thinking somewhere on the east coast. I've been to a few resorts in West Virgina I liked but no shopping.

I did ski outside of Vegas once. I wont make it to the slopes as much though.

Taos might be closer to you but Utah, ALTA in particular is super, super, and sometimes even better. DEEP Powder. I spent 30 days there one winter, almost couldn't leave. Well, I couldn't afford to stay any longer. Shopping must be good, there are a lot of people in Salt Lake City and it has some great places to eat and drink.

There are only 2 places to go on the east coast:

Killington and Stowe. They are both party places. They both have decent shopping and they both have runs that are fantastic. I know Killington better, but I've been to both. I wouldn't expect "powder" like the west cost. That is a function of the Altitude.

Tell me more about the things you like to do and she does.

Oh, there is also Tremblant in Canada. Great resort and there is a great village at the bottom of the mountain.

In Bend, Oregon...close by? Your wife can find all the "shopping" she likes...she can shop till she drops, you can ski powder until you drop.

Ain't life grand??"?

NEXT QUESTION!

My comments on some of the earlier comments....

I love Holiday Valley, but it is not really good enough for a special trip. I have skied there MANY times, but I wouldn't fly in to ski at HV. I ski there because it is by far the best place that is an easy drive from NE Ohio. Other places are better, but further away.

If you go to Vermont, I prefer Stowe to Killington. Nicer town too. I skied at Killington once & I have skied at Stowe 3 times.

I HIGHLY recommend Tremblant. We have skied there twice (both times in March), & both times were fabulous. Great mountain, great village with shops/restaurants, no need for a car once you are there & it really feels like you are in a different country (I know, you are) because they speak French. Tremblant is FAR better than Vermont, in my opinion. Fly into Montreal & drive 1 1/2 hours north.

I also LOVE Taos. I have skied there 5 times. A true skier's mountain -- steep, 50% or more of the slopes are black diamond & no boarders! It is a great place for a ski purist. The town of Taos (about 18 miles away) is great. Not much in the way of nightlife at the ski village. I recommend staying at the Sagebrush Inn in the town of Taos (i.e., not at the base of the slopes). It is a rustic, adobe, authentic Taos experience. It is NOT fancy, but I love it. And a great country bar, where the locals come every night. There is also lots of good shopping in Taos, as well as a lot of nice restaurants. Taos is a little hard to get to -- fly into Albuquerque & drive an hour or 2 (I forget).

Taos also reportedly has one of the top ski schools in the country. I have always wanted to attend one of their "ski better" weeks. They group you with a few other students of similar ability. Then you ski with an instructor every morning & on your own in the afternoon. I have read that it really improves your skiing, regardless of your ability.

I hope this helps. Because of the altitude issue, the shopping requirement & the desire for good slopes, I recommend Tremblant. Check it out -- it is a very well designed resort. You can thank me later!

Fly into SLC. Rent a car. Stay in Park City. Your wife can shop her brains out there. For skiing, you are within 45 minutes of Snowbird, Alta and Solitude as well as Park City. Plus for a day of really well groomed snow, you are next to Deer Valley. And dinner at the lodge there is (used to be?) unbelievable.

The ski school at Taos is damned good. The instructor I had managed to get a group of 1 timers, like myself, getting around pretty good. The guy was from Austria I believe. I'm glad I didn't learn there though. Pretty steep slopes, and not much powder when I was there. The first time I skied was at Wolf Creek Colo. just outside of Pagosa Springs, and there was powder all up in my arse. That was a blessing.

Can't beat Vail/Beaver Creek! Awesome back bowls at Vail and very challenging terrain on the Birds of Prey at Beaver Creek. Plenty of shops all in walking distance in Vail. Great food, bars, and Apre' skiing activities! Plus you can fly directly into Eagle CO.
