I don't want to hijack this thread, but will start another on patriotism vs. nationalism in a minute.

Someone else already beat you to the punch. Remember this thread was on the Colorado shootings.

I'll bet the kid in Omaha could have taken out far more people with a car, just like the kid in California.

And the one in California was a Muslim and said he was doing it for jihad.

What would you ban next, toe nail clippers? Oh crap, that has been done too!

What is different? It is not the easy legal access to guns. Guns are harder to get now than before. And none of these guns have been legally owned that were used.

With 350,000,000 people, I am surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often. Usually the person is KNOWN to have serious problems and those around him ignore him due to "privacy" or other weasel speech.

The main difference between Omaha and Colorado: The Church wasn't a gun free zone and a security guard stopped him before he could do more harm.

There are a lot of differences today. How much mob (groups of people, not the mafia)violence takes place around the USA these days? How many armed mobs attack companies? Violence is nothing new and in fact it is definitely safer living in the USA today than in the previous 200 years. Who has been in NYC in the 1970's-1980's? How safe were the 1920's?

Everyone "thinks" it was so much better as a child, but mostly as a child you weren't aware.

just about choked on my coffee.

To be fair, the 1920's were pretty damn safe in the US.

What we need is more law abiding people with guns. Why do you guys care what a socialist troll has to say, or where he is saying it from? He is a selfish guy eating lotus petals(figuratively of course), anything he does have to say is for his own entertainment, not to provide any benefit to the discussion.

I get really tired of people blaming video games and movies for a kinetic act like a shooting. If anything my son is less violent in the "real" world because he gets his ya yas out on the computer. Akin to track driving taking care of your need for speed. Then again I have regular discussions with him about this stuff and keep track of what he's doing.

The kids are accountable for their actions as are the parents. The 24 hour news cycle also feeds into this but again, let's put some responsibility onto the individual. You don't have to watch that crap. I haven't in years.

During Prohibition?

Guy who sits next to me at work was one of the victims, kind of a somber attitude around here today.

tobster1911 12-10-2007 08:02 AM

Scott,
Sorry to hear that it was a coworker. Our thoughts and prayers go out to this family. My mother-in-law is on staff at New Life. She was not there at the time though. All of the people that I personally know were not involved. A friend, who is a family care Doctor, was there and gave assistance before help arrived.

For those that are off on the gun thing, the shooter did not even make it from the parking lot (where the victims were) to the main part of the building because a female security guard stopped him. The police were on the scene in less than three minutes and it was already over. With the amount of people in that building it would have been so much worse if not for an armed bystander.

I feel like a schmuck, I really didn't know the guy, even though he was right across the isle from me. But that's not unusual around here, nobody in my office is very social. We are setting up a fund for his wife and kids though.

Wow... I'm not sure wtf some people are smoking... but some of these responses are unique!

Legion's right, something in America has changed. When I was a kid, there were guns all over the house, yet I still resorted to hand to hand combat with other people that pissed me off. I NEVER even considered shooting them!

The most important fact is that America refuses to learn from its mistakes. The alcohol prohibition didn't work, yet even now ALL buildings across the river have gone smoke free, even the bars. Now they are trying to ban smoking on this side of the river as well. If you are in a bar, you are already engaged in dangerous behavior (drinking) but no, the country feels they can control what we do and where we do it!

If people are tired of church shootings, close the churches!

No-one can argue the fact that the "church" is at the root of almost ALL major problems experienced between races or countries over the years.

This isn't a hijack, I'm just pointing out the fact that there is a problem in the country. And until we find it, things will only get worse!

I do not believe it is possible to find any single factors causing these tragedies. I am afraid we are observing the natural evolution of man kind society in progress. An ever winding downward spiral toward self destruction.
