Not Boomers.

Boomers brought us Hippies in the 60's, Disco in the 70's, Yuppies in the 80's and deadweight middle management in the 90's. Boomers in the current decade now find themselves up to their overgrown eyebrows in debt because they sold their reasonable sized houses that were nearly paid off for houses that have 3 living rooms.

Do any of you know how long I have had this Thread ready to go...I just had to await the opportune time to launch it.

Most of my friends have either paid off their homes or will (like us) pay them off in the next couple of years. Plus, we've been saving/investing like mad for retirement. Some of you young guys need to give the angst a rest and lay off the generalizations. :)


edit: Disco is a legitimate beef. My only (personal) defense is that I was mostly out-of-country then. :)

If you had any balls (not that you'd be able to see them if you did), you would have taken a swipe at the 'greatest generation'.

The other pillar that shaped the Boomers character was the prosperity and affluence of post WW2 America. That along with parents who didn't want their children to suffer the same want they did because of Depression and War. They gave the Boomers the freedom to explore their inner angst.

You never met my Father...the only inner angst we could have explored was a size 12 firmly planted in my a$$. I said could because he was fair and we knew the rules. I have no idea of the parents of which you speak. I was born in 1957.

mine too. I got a belt across my a$$ when I acted up. Glad he did. Told me how to be truthful and honest about things.

Funny thing is, that is all my parents ever asked...be truthful and honest. Do that and they'd handle the freight.

My Father was born in 1930, served in Korea and Vietnam. In all the times in my life I have even approached the level of peril he faced during my time as a navy pilot (Ernest Will, GWI and subsequent) every we time we talk before I deploy the only thing he ever says is, "do the the right thing and take care of your people".

The fact that I know what he means speaks volumes of him, not me.

Yeah. My kid only received torture when he was dishonest. He turned out fine. My parents were more strict, we had an intimate knowledge of the belt. Somebody mentioned Spock earlier in this thread. The only Spock talked about in my parents' house or in our house was in reference to a pointy-eared science officer.

God bless him. Those traits don't seem to be as valuble to people these days.

I would fall into the later category of a Boomer; born in 1960.

My family has worked hard for everything they've ever had, for generations and generations. We lost my grandfather is the 2nd World War. My brother served and fought for world peace for 20 years in the Canadian Army. He now serves for the UN.

In the late 1800's my great grandfather was a homesteader in the Shuswap Region; he logged and lived off his land. He lost his first wife to illness. He had 5 children. He was a great man that loved and cared for many.

In the early 1900's my grandmother raised two sons without her husband, as the war took him. She worked hard all her life. She re-married at 65. She passed on just after her 85th birthday, not spending a single day of her life in a hospital. She was the most selfless person I've ever known.

In the mid-1900's my mother, born just before the boomers in '44 was pregnant with me at 16, she has lived a hard life; working for most of it. She is retired today and enjoys her family. She lost her own mother only weeks before her plans to move closer to her.

I have lived on my own since 16 (1976); none of my family have ever taken a penny from anyone or from society. We have all contributed greatly to the socialistic programs offered by our Country and we are proud to be Canadian. My family is willing and able to pick up their arms and give their lives for what they believe in; something that is not so easy for many to say today.

If you think for a moment that the current status of our Countries was formed by the pros or cons of the common man/women; then you are sadly misinformed. Yeah we all partied with a little booze, drugs and women; so what; if you didn't; hah, you missed out! Loser. I would suspect that none of us have really reached our prime........ and when we do, what will we give back to society as a whole? Giver or Taker?

All it takes for the forces of evil to prevail are a FEW good men to sit back and do nothing.

As for Legion (Chris) and his post; lighten up on him man! The kid is young and very bright. He's got more going on in his young mind than I ever did. This kid will amount to greatness one day! He just needs to be pointed in the right direction. I always enjoy reading what he has to say on a topic, as many of the others here too. Some good thought provoking things to ponder.
