I think the 993 lids fit earlier cars, but I don't think the 993 and earlier lids fit 996 and later cars.

I haven't played with a 996 in a while, but I have a '96 993 and all the 993 decklids are the same, excluding grill inserts and various spoilers. I'm pretty sure it won't even come close to fitting. Last I remember wrenching on a 996, the opening to the engine area was a lot smaller than on my 993. There are a lot more 996's out there than 993's, so a spare decklid shouldn't be hard to find or too expensive if you want to mess with it.

They are very different.

these pics are from the MAShaw catalog and I think they show the differences quite clearly.

95% of the time, it doesn't fit 100% of the time.

I believe all pre 993 911's, would have interchangeable deck lids, providing there isn't paraphernalia from the motor sticking out. The 993 changed the rear en of the car for the first time since the model came out in the 1960's. The 996 again, changed the rear of the car, so no, it won't fit the shape of the 996.

Why would you spend the time/effort/$$ when we told you it won't fit?

It's your car of course but I don't see why.
