Ever hear the story from San Diego about 10 years ago? The daughter of a guy in Mexico that owned 1/2 of their media outlets went to UCSD medical center to have her baby that they knew would have health issues. Seems to me the taxpayers there footed $300K in medical bills. That's just one episode.

During the recent wild fires in San Diego, up to 10 illegal aliens hid from authorities in the brush and ended up with severe burns. They are being treated for free at a local hospital and the costs are expected to top $5 million. That cost will be passed onto the people who live here legally one way or the other. Higher healthcare costs, higher insurance costs, higher taxes.

Then, the lawyers for those illegal alien criminals filed suit because the California and US government didn't do enough to find these people who were hiding from them so they could save them from a fire that happened in a country they were not supposed to be in!

They broke into our country, they hid, they got burned, we are paying to treat them, and they are suing us because we didn't play hide and seek with them. A few more gallons of gasoline would have done the trick.

Well, I live in FL, and as to all talk action, I do participate in local politics, communicate with law enforcement, but since I have a business that is close to 22 years old (08 is our 22nd year) it would be stupid for me to give that up, when people depend on me. Seems to me that neither the libs or the conservatives on the federal level take the problem seriously. Nothing of note has been accomplished except a bit of posturing.

I live in one of them "border states" and yes, illegals can be a problem, but not as bad as some would like to paint it. Perhaps we get a little better class of illegals down here than they do in Florida.

Actually, a dumb waste of money. I wonder what the average time is for a deported alien who "had" to leave a job is for them to return. My guess is: less than 30 days, probably one month.

Years ago, I worked at a business across the street from some low cost rentals usually inhabited by aliens. We'd see the green Border Patrol van show up, and withing 3-4 weeks, the same guys would be back. This was in San Jose, CA (not SoCal) and my guess is with the refined mechanisms in place, much faster today.

I agree about the reentry comment, Ed. That's why I've said multiple times that we need to secure our borders and ports effectively. The original post described Portland's policy of giving $20k to the family of an illegal that was impacted by the city's crackdown on illegal immigration. Shipping them all home is cheaper than providing a $20k taxpayer-funded handout to them.

Actually we should deport anyone caught hiring or aiding illegals in any way...starting with Portland's city mgt...or at least confiscate their business and jail them.

Stop the supply (border enforcement) and the demand (severe employer penalties), and create an environment of cooperation and collaboration between the federal, state and local jurisdictions.
