bobby petrino is coming to arkansas..

Petrino leaves Falcons, will coach Arkansas
Jay Glazer
FOXSports.com, Updated 8 minutes ago

Bobby Petrino was introduced as the new Arkansas head coach late Tuesday, just hours after he resigned as Atlanta Falcons coach. He lasted only 13 games with the NFL team.

Petrino leaves Falcons

Petrino was hired to succeed Houston Nutt, who stepped down at Arkansas two weeks ago and became the head coach at Mississippi.

Petrino was introduced as the 30th Razorbacks coach by incoming athletic director Jeff Long at a late-night news conference Tuesday.

"It is a tremendous honor for me to be named the 30th head coach at Arkansas, particularly on a night when we honored coach (Frank) Broyles for his 50 years service," Petrino said, referring to former head coach and outgoing athletic director Frank Broyles. "He's such a legend and I can't wait to develop a relationship with him."

Petrino called a Falcons staff meeting late Tuesday afternoon, a meeting which last about 10 seconds, sources said.

"He just said to us, 'Guys I've resigned, I'm going to Arkansas. I'm sorry. I'll be talking with you guys in the future.' And with that he turned and walked out the door. We haven't been told anything else," said one assistant coach.

He better be ready for one heck of a season. The SEC is just a little bit different then the Big East... Also, LSU wants that boot back!

would that be the 'boot' resting peacefully up in fayetteville tonight..?

well, arkansas fans have been screaming for some pass offense for years..now we'll probably get to see some. if we get a quarterback with a head and an arm.

Just the guy I want running my program. Three jobs in three years. I am sure his speeches are full of references to dedication and commitment, something he hasn't shown. The Falcons need leadership now more than ever, instead their leader is the first one in the lifeboat. Obviously the Atlanta situation is terrible, but at least have the class to finish the season. Is he going to be at Arkansas for four years, or four games?

He left after a "ten second" speech in the locker room! The press is calling him "Classless" after the Falcons Manager (Blank) was praising his presence as the Falcons coach. I guess after Vick left to capitalize on killing dogs and his backup three quarterbacks could do nothing for the team, college ball was beckoning. Oh well, now the Falcons will try for a new QB in the draft and a new coach. Every bit helps, but he is getting negative press here for the quick bolt out the door.

Petrino is an ass. way to go walking out on everybody DURING the season.
Hopefully recruits will be wary of attending Arkansas knowing their coach is a flake.

+1 on chapo's and Eric 951's comments.

Why would any kid agree to go to Arkansas - its not like Petrino can look him (or his parents) in the eye and say "Come play for me - I'm committed to Arkansas and I'm going to be your coach the whole time".

And no, I'm not naive in believing that college football isn't a business, it is, but I still do believe that coaches (whether they are youth, high school, college or pro) have responsibility for exhibiting and teaching morals.

Case in point - last night at the end of my 11-year old son's basketball practice, a kid complained that someone had thrown his gatorade into the trash can. Coach (a dad) asked the team who did it. One kid (to his credit) fessed up. Coach had WHOLE team run liners, with the explanation that they are a TEAM and what one does impacts the TEAM. Point was made and noted -- during the car ride home, my son and another teammate talked about it amongst themselves and came to the same conclusion as the coach. All for one and one for all.

Obviously, Petrino is all about all for one - himself.

just curious if anyone's opinion on this would differ had he elected to finish out the season? atlanta's season is not recoverable and this does at the very least give them more time to find a new coach to help salvage next season. i do imagine petrino wants a quick start on recruiting that the early exit provides. i agree it's a sticky issue. he'll have tough questions to answer top the press.

Actually his decision makes me question his commitment to Atlanta during the entire season. It is not like Arkansas just decided last week that Petrino was "their man". He obviously knew they were interested in him and perhaps that distraction is what contributed to some of his questionable coaching moves and perceived aloofness by veterans. He signed a (4 or 5 year IIRC)contract with Atlanta and when things started going sour during the offseason with the Vick mess I think he immeadiately began thinking of ways he could get himself out of the situation. Just the quality one would want in a head coach--when the going gets tough, quit.

He is an ass.

College ball is a business alright and after his first win in Arkansas the Falcons episode will fade away into history. The Falcon players are now coming out and revealing what a jerk the guy was! He rarely talked to his players and remained self-centered. He was not a popular coach here. As an Atlanta fan I am happy this guy is finally out of town!!!!!!!!! You can have him.

No one is loyal. $2.5 mill. Bowl game or not.

"Rodriguez was extremely emotional in the meeting with his West Virginia players that lasted less than 10 minutes Sunday, a person at the meeting told ESPN. He had difficulty telling his team, "Others have contacted me but this one I had to listen." "
