The Mismanagement of the Knicks Franchise

Great example of how not to run a team or company for that matter...

The Mismanagement of the Knicks Franchise
By Lori Deschene MBET.com

December 13th, 2007 @ 3:23 pm

Want to learn how not to screw up a fantastic opportunity to manage a well-known and much-loved brand? Take a pointer or two from The Knicks’ management. MSNBC broke it down nicely, explaining how the New York Knicks are becoming “the biggest punchline in American sports.”

Management deals poorly with labor costs. The franchise:

Pays tens of millions of dollars to Larry Brown, a former coach, and one-time players, like Jalen Rose, not to work.

Gives almost $20 million to guard Stephon Marbury who’s becoming most famous for his indiscretions with a Madison Square Garden intern.

Spent near $120 million — the most in the NBA — on languid players last year.
Their coach has a long history of management failures:

He led the Continental Basketball Association when it declared bankruptcy in 2001.

He was fired as the Indiana Pacers coach.

He lost a much-publicized sexual-harassment suit recently, and somehow keeps making millions damaging The Knicks’ reputation.

Cablevision hasn’t helped the cause:

They’ve never secured a naming-rights deal. Ratings for the first six games this season on Cablevision-owned MSG Network dropped more than 25 percent. Cablevision’s not doing so well overall, posting a quarterly loss of about $80 million in November

The author points out that Forbes named The Knicks the most valuable franchise in the NBA for the past three seasons, worth $600 million — but that’s bound to change soon. The team isn’t getting any breaks with bad ownership, management, and PR — and it doesn’t help that The Knicks keep losing.

I didn't realize that there was still people out there who would actually pay American money to see the clowns now in the NBA trying to play basketball!

It has devolved (is that a word) from true basketball to the playground crap that was developed in the hood. Find a ref from the 1960's and the current breed of "superstars" could not even get the damn ball across the center line.
They either palm the ball or take steps nearly every time.

Same with those "unbelievable" moves that the current group make to the basket. If Bob Cousy or Oscar Robertson would have been allowed to do the bull**** that these guys do they would have been unstopable.

And if Wilt Chamberlain played by the current rules he would have averaged 70 points a game!!

IMHO.

WORD. Spoken like a classic fan. We may never see a Magic/Bird period!
Miss the old days of game.

Now it is just a circus. Like most baseball games! Don't get me going on the bowl games in college football.... ;-)

Yeah, you are correct about baseball. Those bozos are even worse than the NBA jewelery wagons. At least the hoops guys do have to run up and down the court. Plus the influx of Europeans into the NBA seems to be doing some good! (just like it did for the development of the auto)

But the baseball clods are on the fringe of lunacy. The dipshix managers will actually say how they just have to "rest" certain players. Gimme a break. Except for the pitcher and catcher, the rest of them could mostly watch soap operas and not miss a beat during a game. They stand around so much that they seem to develop some strange strain of jock rash...always scratching!

You take a Major League outfielder and he probably does not exert himself more than 2 minutes during an average game. And yet these guys need REST!!! Get real. It's no damn wonder that they need steroids to play a little boys game. Just imagine if they worked in a factory for 8 hours a day. Their careers would only last until Wednesday!

Well, about as much as someone else might "care" about a list of vehicles owned.

Just imagine if Harry was a goober who wanted to list all his cars: http://www.mathewscollection.com/collection_history.htm

Now there's a guy who can say "WTF" and mean it!!

You missed the point. The poster that said "WTF" about the sports stuff had a bunch of relatively mundane cars listed and the inference was that someone who really had a lot of nice cars might say the same "WTF" about him!

Get it? Now forget Britney and list some more tacky cars.

If you think the Knicks are mismanaged, have you seen how Kubcheck has done to the Lakers in the last 4-5 years...
