Website building Questions

I own my domain name, hughrose.com, I have an old version of Front Page which I got from someone, don't remember whom. Anyway, I have a new Vista machine and before I start learning website building, I thought I'd ask the PPOT brain trust, I'm not comfortable using a questionable copy of Front Page, any thoughts on free or other web building software?

Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions. BTW, this is strictly for a learning experience, not for a business.

I like Dreamweaver, but for basic website construction it's over the top. Pick a product that does what you need and has plenty of free templates on the 'net to get you started.

Stay away from FrontPage, it uses too many extensions, etc... Dreamweaver is definetly the tops, but you should check with your hosting company as many of them offer FREE really easy drag and drop type web page building tools. (Like Yahoo, etc)

Your hosting provider probably provides a free template driven website authoring program. DON'T USE FRONTPAGE. 'nuf said.

I have used frontpage for years. It layers down way more html than nessecary, but its easy to use.

I WOULD NOT use it to build a menu system of any kind. If you want to have a consistant menu on every page, we can teach you how to do server side includes.

see if your isp provides a cms like drupal, joomla, etc. You can get a lot of functionality for not a lot of work.

FrontPage is evil. Run screaming. Now.

Hey Hugh,
I'm no GEEK by any means, but I do this:
buy my domain and host it through goDaddy.com
I build my website on Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite
Then I optimize it in html format in Adobe ImageReady (included in photoshopCS)
Then I link the pages, links, etc. together in Dreamweaver
Then I publish it to the webpage with Rhino Software, FTP Voyager

I've been doing this for years and haven't bothered to learn any other way?
If you need help in any of the steps, I'd be glad to chime in; otherwise I'll grab a coffee and see what the Geeks chime in with?

Cheers bud

Nvu, which used to be the Netscape Composer product. It is both free as in beer and Free as in speach as well...

Thanks guys, I'll look and see what my ISP, (Roadrunner) provides first. Then I'll look at a few others if it doesn't meet my needs. Rob, what you do sounds like a lot of work. I'll try free and simple first. This is just for goofing around.

I should point out that the best way to learn HTML is to simply steal another site that you like and pick apart the code.

Ok, I downloaded NVU and did a simple test page, I click publish and it says its connecting and publishing, but its been doing it for like five minutes. This can't be normal. All I put on the index page was a few words, it had a previous index page that I did last night using Frontpage. Any suggestions?
