How do you sell a rifle?
My father-in-law wants to give us 5 old rifles for us to sell. One is a Browning automatic, and I don't know what the others are yet. How do you sell rifles? It doesn't seem like you could just stick them on the internet and ship them out. Ideas?

1) Take them to an FFL. He may sell them on consignment, or buy them directly from you.
2) List them on Gubroker. They must be shipped from your FFL to a receiving FFL. 3) Sell them privately within your state. You might be able to unload them at a gun show. 4) Send me some pictures of the Browning with an asking price. ![]()

Check how old the rifles are...If they're older than 50 yrs old in California you can sell them face to face with out paperwork
IF they're newer then that you can sell them, but you must take them and the new owner to a gunstore to exchange the rifles and info. A widow in Torrance Ca. brought a M14 rifle into a gunstore to sell, only problem was that it "fell off a military truck" and was full auto. oops You might want to send a private email with photos to someone who can help...please check your private msgs

Thanks, Chris. Other ideas?
I'll post pics and info on the whole collection when I get them. It might be awhile. Maybe I need to go no further than this very site to sell them. I'm sure tabs will give me a buck fifty for one of them. ![]()

Thanks to you too, Jim.
My wife was all in a dither on how to unload them, so I says to her, I says, "Don't worry, I know where to ask. I'll have answers before your pancakes are done." I was right. You gotta love this site.

Each State has rules in addition to the Federal Rules. Here in Texas, I can sell "Face to Face" inside the state. No paperwork needed, but I am supposed to make sure that the person can own a firearm. If I sell out of state, all I need to do is ship the firearm to a FFL near the person.
In California, you have to transfer firearms using an FFL at both ends. You cannot ship guns from yourself to a FFL. You have to carry it to a FFL who would then forward it for you to the next FFL. www.gunbroker.com is a very good way to sell firearms. Also, you do not want the guns "given" to you. That would not be legal in California. One thing to note, a lot of older guns were Grandfathered in California. Those same models cannot be sold new. These can bring a much higher price in California than in other states. Post pictures and models here before you do anything else. I am sure some of us would prefer to deal directly with you, than you paying auction fees, etc. Is the Browning Auto, full Auto or semi-automatic?

Red beard,
it's worse than that. some rifles legally owned today in California CAN'T be sold, traded etc. to anyone in California. If my M1A rifle had the flash suppressor on it, it's a "assault weapon" but it's legal with a muzzle break. I doubt that the browning is a military BAR...but if I see photos I'll advise

RedBeard brings up some good points on the grandfathered situation in CA. Would bring a lot more money if these are covered in this catagory.
Gunbroker is a good place or list them here first and see if anyone wants them. Joe

In NY State, you would just list those rifles in the sporting goods section of the local paper's classified section. They have an extra value because they are unregistered and not officially tracked. That is the advantage of not using a FFL. Or the local Penne-E-Saver. Is that possible in CA? The other responders seem to say no. Around here they would be gone in a few days out the garage door for cash. Glenn

Rifles are different in MY than a Handgun. But, CA, everything has to go through a FFL. Here in Texas, I can sell anything to a Texas resident, short of a Class III, directly.

Glad I don't live on the left coast!
Round here you park your pickup truck at your local Home Depot or Menards, drop the tailgate, spread out the rifles, and sit in a lawn chair or milk crate in the bed of the truck til you've sold 'em all. (which probably wouldn't take long, maybe 3 hours)!! What is all the "paperwork" you speak of?? ![]() ![]()

+1 for gunbroker .
I've bought and sold there for years with no problems . Also many states allow for a face to face with a state drivers lisc . Here in Ohio I could post an add in the paper and sell them locally . Another option would be to consign them through a gun store and they could do the transfer for you . I've been in the market for a 22 cal. Walther model 1 for some time , changes are it's not one of the remaining 4 rifles but if it is I might be a player . SxS ( that's side by side for the unknowing )

Legion, Red, and Chris are ALL right. Rule of thumb is you can sell it any way you like, but to be on the safe side do the deal through an FFL. The cost will keep you out of trouble with ATF. Each state has it's own rules. Gunbroker is a good way to go as you get you money up front, you ship it from your FFL, and then it is up to the buyer to get it at his FFL and play 20 questions with him. If he is no good you are out of the loop and still have your cash.
