Rolodex - should I?

I've been following all of the phone number retrieval threads and doing research on Dogpile, etc. I was never into the Rolodex experience, but "Hermes"'s and "Juanessa"'s (among others) words of wisdom have planted seeds. I am now considering it as an "investment". Not to make money, but more to not lose money. The theory would be to start at a reasonable level, use it for a year, sell it, maybe move up, maybe take a minor loss and start over. Either way, I'm using something I like for a year or so. Anyway, here 'tis-

Used 1972 Desking. About $12. It's the "cheapest" model that Rolodex sells, but that's not the reason I like it. I like it's simplicity and it's history.

Is it necessary or practical? Of course not. But, neither is my 911, among many things in my life.

Help me out guys - Yea or Nay?

your first step is www.Rolodexforums.com, be sure to read every thread and every post paying particular attention to years 1992, 1994-1999 and 2004-2005.5. Next find every back issue of every magazine that mentions Rolodex and read untill your brain hurts. Until then you arent entitled to an opinion.

I say save up and buy the one you really want. Think of all the time you will save having to reenter in your contacts numbers.

Rolodex sucks, I mean take a look at the finish on the tumbler and you know that there is not attention paid to detail at all. See ho the tabs are not aligned when you tumble through it? Not like they used to make it.

If you want a quality phone number retrival system then you should get the ones made by IPC, Philip Patrick and if you really know quality RPTQ. Stupid Noob.

This is good. I'm pretty sure he is poking fun at the Rolex threads that have been posted recently.

I understand the want of nice stuff but don't watches tell the time all about the same?

My cell phone has this really cool clock built right in. Pretty cool.

3 x 5 cards in a shoebox also perform the same duty, albeit with a lot more capacity for expansion.

Considering something like that is pure status and show I would start with the most expensive one you can afford. You will want everyone to see that you have only the best. Also when you move up to the next level it won't be such a long jump.

If you only are interested in the show and won't be around those who know better then why not go for one of the cheep Hong Kong imitations and save all that money. They look almost the same.

I'd thought about mortgaging my mother's house and going for the top of the line, but, way back when, I was raised in Painesville and was brought up to eschew grandiose displays of wealth (I realize that Cuyahoga Falls is a bit more upscale...I'm sure you get my drift, Ralphie).

Yet I dream of "some day".....acquiring the Rolodex that in my heart of hearts I know that I deserve - I get teary eyed when I gaze upon it;

Mint 1998 Captain of Industry. Extraordinary (if you can find one for sale) - Saw one five years ago at Christie's go for $63. One can only imagine what it's worth today.

I don't know man, $12 for a used Rolodex.

I'll be in NYC week after next. I can make a quick trip down to Chinatown and score you a brand new Rolodox for probably $.69, and it'll even work better too. Might turn your fingertips green as you flip through it though.

I'm brand new to the Rolodex collector scene, but I have learned one thing - NEVER be fooled by a Rolodox posing as a Rolodex!

So, thanks anyway, Shaun - I'll pass.
