uick question re: Remington 700 rifles

Anybody know how interchangeable bolts are on Rem 700 in different calibers? E.g., will bolt out of a .22-250 work in a .270?

Dtr's boyfriend got a new rifle and apparently the firing pin broke...won't fire. Can hear the trigger release but pin doesn't hit the primer of the cartridge.

I'd never risk it, alot of back pressure in that chamber.. Shouldn't be too hard to fix..

Dueller 12-24-2007 08:27 PM

Well a bolt out of an earlier 700 .270 should work, right?

Not fond of your daughter's boyfriend?

OK...I think I answered my own question...on the Remington website the part # for a 22-250 bolt and a 270 bolt are different....

Now on a mass produced rifle, I assume the bolts of a same caliber, same model are interchangeable...

Although it may physically "fit", without being able to check with a headspace gauge and without checking the lug engagement bearing quality, it is not to be a reccommended action.

Remington will repair it for free quite quickly. The law was that you are allowed to ship directly to them (the manufacturer) and they can ship directly to you, if you are the owner. You can check that on their web site.

I think they may have different bolt faces. Different head space for sure, the firing pins maybe swappable. Use caution!

Around here we call things like that 'brother-in-law' guns.
'Daughter's boyfriend guns' convey the same but is harder to say.

Was out "star gazing" about 5 this morning and saw the sleigh was "pulling sharply" to the left...I'm assuming you got one :)

22-250 is the short action and 270 is the long action. Not interchangeable.

charleskieffner 12-25-2007 04:03 AM

firing pin on any rem long action or short action no matter the caliber is about " a NO BRAINER" as it comes to replace. can you put a car antenna back on? thats how simple it is.

tool of choice........... a nickel. use nickel to pry holding piece up and entire firing pin and spring will come out. wipe it down, lightly lube it. and replace. more than likely this occurred due to dry firing and not using a snap cap. dont dry fire weapons.

hot ticket..........titanium firing pin! full race mofo with quicker lock times. LOL!

Never mix parts in the receiver on any gun unless you are a gunsmith. Asking for a problem...

id10t 12-25-2007 10:13 AM

Change the bolt and you'll possibly change headspace, which is what keeps all that pressure in. However, you should be able to swap firing pins, maybe need to stay in the same cartridge class (med lenght like 308/243/22-250 vs. long 270, 30-06, etc)...

Now this is truly a Darwin moment. Lets see if he survives it?

FOG 12-26-2007 12:57 PM

Dueller,

The bolt faces are the same as the .270 and 22/250 share the same case head. They are on different length actions so no interchange is possible. That goes for long vs. short firing pins as well.

You can send it back to Remington directly (cheapest) or send it/take it to a competent gunsmith who can swap out the firing pin quickly (if that is the problem).

Do not attempt to swap bolts, firing pins, or any of the sub-assemblies.

Is the ammunition factory new from one of the major manufacurers?

I went to my gun case and realized I too had a 700 bdl in .270. We compared bolts and they were identical. Swapped and fired one round. Shipped his bolt to Remington for repair. He hunted with another gun.

Thanks all for your input.
