The use of the word "attic" is such a metaphor for the subconscience...

Nostatus, the personal rancor reflected in that remark I don't intend to dignify with comment. But I would like to address your general attitude of hopeless negativism. Consider the lilies of the goddamn field or... hell! Take at look at Tabs here as your paradigm of hope

tabs was bored. Or cleaning out his attic.
But seriously...the movie is amazing. No preaching, I swear. But great insight into how China is developing (you won't believe the factory footage) and the implications for them and relation to others. And the stuff from Ship Breaker Beach in Bangladesh is similarly amazing. |

I really think this is an important film. Most of us sit in relative isolation, buy our stuff, work at our job, and go on our merry way. We are oblivious to what is happening around us, and the implications of industrialization, globalization, and consumerism.
I had no idea what went on at Ship Breaker Beach, nor the scope of the Three Gorges dam project, etc. 1.5M people relocated. And they were paid to tear down their own buildings so the bricks could be reused. This isn't just history repeating itself, mostly due to the sheer numbers involved and where we are wrt energy consumption and supplies. And supply/consumption of materials in general. The thing that is great about the film is that Burtynsky doesn't say, "this is bad" or "this is good." He just captures the essence of what is going on so that others can experience it and make their own judgment. While there is certainly some bias, it isn't overt or preachy. No scare tactics or graphs. Just visual images of worlds we don't often (if ever) see. But should. Because we are a part of it. |

Don't include me in this "most of us" cr@p...Most of you applys here, so don't include me..Baby. I have been the one on the soap box ranting and raving about the state of the modern world for years on this Board. Now your just waking up? The paradox is that your modern lifestyle with all your gadgets is dependent upon economies of scale any hiccup in that economy has very adverse effects on that lifestyle. So it becomes damed if you do and double damed if you don't. Another irony is that goods have become increasingily throw away with planned life spans. This is necessary because economys of scale need to keep you buying in order to survive. And they say modern tech is da bomb..

Yep my Shrink friend has always told me I was one twisted, sick indivdual...and would have loved to Shrink my head down to the size of a pea. However I didn't want to become a conformist, and be just like everybody else.
I really think my Shrink friends motivation for wanting to Shrink my head was not for my betterment but for the book he could write about me. Of course he would glorify his own role in saving me from myself as it were. That oughta have earned him a Nobel Peace Prize or sumthin along those lines....

i would never include a man of wealth in taste in "most of us." That goes without saying, and I'm shocked and dismayed that you would feel the need to call out your singular specialness. Mother has hurt you bad...it's ok. Come into the light.

I'm familiar with the three gorges project and the relocation that was involved, the way they forced so many to move to a different location. Wasn't it Spock who said "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few"? In the show I watched the people were upset because they were forced to tear down their shanties and shacks and old buildings and move to more modern tennement style housing. Now I wouldn't care for that either, but in reality they are probably better off for the most part. Was it justified? Debatable. Was it necessary? Probably. How many lives are being saved and will be saved because of the reduced flooding? Millions. Strong and reasonable arguments on both sides. I wouldn't like it if I was on their side.
IIRC that ship breaker beach is where they buy old ships, run em aground and tear em down for scrap using near slave labor, correct? I saw a program on that a while back and the two major complaints were the low wages/poor working conditions and the total disregard for the environmental impact. I was struck with one impression: these people were very poor. Dirt poor, starvation poor. This guy brings in old junk ships and provides jobs to many who would otherwise starve. yes the working conditions suck big time and the wages are minimal to say the least, but the workers are working and putting food on the table. Is it really that bad if it helps them survive? The alternative is starvation. They could and should take more steps to keep from screwing up the environment, that's a given. They should also try and make the working conditions safer but remember this is basically a fourth world country. Peoplel ike this get blown up every year trying to scavenge gasiline from a pipe rupture they caused. But if cleaning up the operation takes so much that they have to shut down the business, who really loses? the people they are trying to protect. It has the potential to be much better than it is but it is not a bad thing now it just doesn't go far enough. Clean it up, make it safer, but don't kill the one and only chance at a job these people may ever get. |

PS, can you tell that I almost never watch network television, haven't seen a sit com in years, but religiously watch PBS, TLC, and the discovery channel?
