The tax rebates. Will they hit my house?

My 17 year old son and my 15 year old daughter got their W2s. Besides babysitting, my daughter worked in my office for a few days. She paid 82¢ in Federal withholding. Mine son paid a lot more.

If the tax rebates are passed, are each of my kids gonna get their $300? I'm guessing they will not if I claim them as dependents.

FWIU there's a minimum annual income they must realize. I believe it's $3500. Not sure how the dependent issue works out.

I heard illegals are going to be getting refunds but I never got the details. Anyone know about this?

I would think that they'd have to have valid SSN's, W4's, and W2's to make that true. Can they have all of that as illegals? Just curious.

Sounds like BS. Most illegals cannot file tax returns as they do not have valid SSNs/TINs.

Pardon me as I go back to the sidelines so some asshead can step up and bleat "But all illegals are paid cash, why would they file taxes".

Idunno about the rebate... I'd be more worried about AMT from the looks of things.

Agree they don't file but they are in the system (those on actual payrolls with bad papers). So they have a name and an address, legit or not.

As I understand it, each couple, husbanc/wife will get $1000.00 back. Then YOU will get $300 for each child in your household that you claim. Since the kids live with you, you are responsible for them, thus the check.

I'll get nothing. I'm sure of that. Oh wait, I've got AMT. That's nice.

Isn't there a $75k income cutoff or am I out of date on this? I assume that would exclude pretty much everyone on this BBS. No?

Considering that the bulk of the cars on here are probably worth between $10-20k, that might be a stretch. I think we have a real distribution of incomes on the BBS, which helps make it as diverse as it is.

I'm ***** outta luck on the rebates thing, but, to be honest, it won't kill me and having the money wouldn't make any difference on my spending habits. It's a pity that a lot of that money will go to the Chinese via Wal-Mart. Oh well, I'd better start learning Mandarin.

The limit is $75K for individuals, $150K total for a married couple.

I also heard some discussion about how illegals WILL be able to get the money. Apparently, a SS number isn't required? I don't know, though.

Yes, and that DOES make me wonder. I really hate the idea of ET (Elian Tavares???) phoning home and going "Hey mang, yoo got to come up here ese, now dees Jorj Boosh, he sending us free money".

Depends what criteria IRS uses in determining the rebate payee population. I'm hoping (and tend to believe) that the IRS will x-ref the SSA database. If they do, illegals get paid nada. This is the same way that you cannot file taxes without a valid SSN - one of the first things the IRS does is ping SSA with the number and crosschecks it against the exact name associated with it. If SSA rejects, so does IRS. Had a problem with getting my wife on my return our first year of marriage. Couldn't figure out what the hell name SSA had on file for her, tax return kept getting kicked out.

Actually, I remember the discussion now. They were talking about how there was some loophole in the House bill that would (or may) have allowed illegals to get the rebates. But apparently that loophole has been closed/fixed.

One way I'm pretty sure an illegal could get a rebate is if they had been legal for a while, paid taxes and then fell out of status. That happens to tons of foreigners living and working in the US. It's crazy how easily it can happen and how screwed your whole life can be. Get an H1 sponsor, make good money, build a career, pay tons of taxes, get laid off or fired and boom! If you can't find another H1 sponsor, you're out of status and technically here illegally. Worse yet, you can be here totally legally, leave the country, even having gotten a reentry permit before departure and then get denied reentry when you come back. I wonder if the IRS would mail a rebate abroad in such a case. IRS doesn't care at all about USCIS or DHS. IRS just wants money and doesn't care about the immig. status of those who pay it.

The House version of the stimulus plan has cutoff at $75k AGI for singles. The Senate version of the plan doubles the cutoff to $150k AGI for single.

Sorry for the ref to faux news, but it was a quick find. Anyone have confirmation that the loophole in the "plan" has been closed?
