Are you a Ford, GM, or Chrysler guy?

I was talking to my dad the other day, and mentioned how my father-in-law is a huge Mopar buff. Being a Pontiac muscle car nut, he retorted with something to the affect of "Chryslers are junk." My father-in-law has always owned Chrysler products and likes to poke fun at my German cars. Both wondered what I liked in the way of American cars, and I said Fords. I didn't want to take sides, old men can be pretty opinionated about American makes. Then again I do like the old Mercury Cougars and Marauders, and the old Lincoln Mark series. Obviously, I'm a Porsche guy...but if I had to choose an American car:

'69 Merc. Marauder

I wouldn't turn my nose up at most of the old GM or Mopar muscle. If I wanted a muscle car that is....

I think it's like religion and politics, it's learned from your parents and family. I'm a GM guy.

When I bought a new truck in '01, I test drove a Ford. As we were driving around the salesman said, "so, what do think?".

I said it's OK, but I'm really a Chevy guy. He said, "me too"

Chevy all the way baby!

(I drive a ford truck though, I tell people it's because I can't afford a chevy)

One of my best friends owns the GM dealership here AND I sold him the land he built it on.

For trucks I like GM. I have owned Suburbans, vans and two pickups ( currently driving a 1997 GMC 1/2 ton ). My daily driver is a Toyota RAV4 and then the two Porsches.

LOL! I remember the Hillman Minx...a classmate in high school had one.

Detroit iron? I've owned something from all of the "Big Three", as they were once known. My first car was a '50 Ford. fun car. Had a couple of (bought new) Pontiac GTO's. Should have kept the '65. Then I got into Porsches for a spell, had 4 of those. When I sold the last one, I promised Cindy no more Porsches. I intend to keep that promise.

Still have a '77 Dodge Power wagon.

Back to Detroit now...Ford, because I don't want to buy anything made by a willing ward of the state. Easy to drive, quick, and comfortable...that sums up an '09 Bullitt Mustang. Kind of boring, really...almost too easy to drive.

Having had Japanese, German, Italian, French, Ford, Chrysler, and Chevy, I've found the Chevy's and German's to be the most reliable. Seems as though they all have one issue or another.

You know what they say about opinions :>)

None of the above? If I had to choose for a modern car it would be difficult, none of them make any products that appeal to me. The Pontiac G8 GXP was appealing, but is no more. The Taurus SHO is too damn big and heavy. The SRT 300 and Charger are automatic only. The muscle cars are also too big and heavy, even the new Mustang GT I drove felt really big and it's the smallest of the three. Ultimately I'd vote for Ford because they didn't take a bailout, and their garden variety cars aren't bad. In the next few years their lineup will get even better with the European market Fiesta and Focus, both excellent cars.

I should be a MOPAR man, my dad grew up in Richard Petty's hometown and was a dedicated MOPAR fanatic. Of course, after 30 years of driving crappy Chryslers he finally gave up. Today he drives a Hyundai and my mom has a Toyota.

Used to be a Chevy guy, but that was a long time ago. Different era.
If pressed to buy something American, it would probably be a Ford truck, but jeez, do they have to be so fugly?

There are precisely 2 American cars that really get my attention: late 60s/very early 70s Mustangs and pre-1970 Corvettes. I really can't think of anything else that turns me on any more than a washing machine or dishwasher does.

Back when the whole bankruptcy thing was going on, my dad suggested they drive a line of all the American cars built over the years from Detroit to Washington, to remind everyone of all the great cars. My response was "yeah, but what about the sucker who has to drive the 1982 Ford Tempo?"

Dad started with a Dodge after WWII

I think the pic was taken 9/48 from the back of it rather than July 49.
By the time we kids came along Dad had moved to Olds for cars and Chevy for trucks. He has a 2004 Alero now which is his last car.
He let me buy a 71 Ford Mustang and taught my brother and I to keep it running even as he cursed it. So if not German (DD's a VW) it'd probably be a Ford for me.
