Amazing the old fart does come up with a bit of wisedom from time to time...add my approval to his message.

Sorry to hear this buddy, but I been thinkin' it was time a few posts ago. You did the right thing for your little pal. A horrible thing for YOU to have to do I know, I had to do it myself. You will never forget that last look. He will always live in your heart.

lisa_spyder 01-08-2008 02:50 PM

Byron,

21 years of love and affection and loyalty...and now you have 21 years' worth to remember with love and affection.

We can't stop the hurt like Paul said; but you did the right thing. It was a selfless act.

Off to give my (remaining) bunny and puppy some hugs...

Cheers,

Lisa

RIP Carrera. 21 years was one hell of a run.

Byron, take comfort knowing that most of us have never had 21 years with our furry kids. You two were really lucky to have that long.

Hell, some of us have never had 21 years in a marriage!

No beer in the fridge, but I'm lifting my Diet Coke to both of you.

DUK 01-08-2008 03:50 PM

Sorry to here this Byron. Sounds like a good buddy to have had.

I'm sure he's missing you as much.

bigchillcar 01-08-2008 08:34 PM

gosh, byron..if anyone can relate to this experience of late, i surely can. everyone is telling you the right thing - that they're obviously animals and that they care. well, me too. my heart goes out to you, honestly. i have cried rivers over losing my lilbear. i know it's part of it all..let it out, bug guy..i'll be 42 in about a week..no shame here in blubberin' i can tell you.

what a life he had..and you just know that he knew and felt the love, even better than my lilbear if for no other reason that the brain of a cat is larger than that if a rabbit. i'm so sorry, byron..we'll be here for you if you need to talk, pm or whatever..
best,
ryan

Sorry, Byron. You gave your cat a great life, can't do any more than that. RIP Carrera.

gassy 01-08-2008 08:45 PM

Sorry Byron,
hang in there.
Christian.

Byron,
Sounds about like the situation with my cat that passed away June 11th at a little over 20 years old. I was really in the dumps for a long time. But in the end, what counts for all of us including our pets, is the quality of life we led. Mine had a great life as yours did I'm sure. That's the best gift we could give them. Imagine how long he would have lasted as a stray compared to the life you gave him. I still find myself thinking she's going to come around the corner or that I have to get home to feed her. But I have fond memories, which is what you will keep with you.
Hang in there.

Thanks Ryan, and everyone, yes, at 42 (43 this year, 6' & 225lbs) I have cried about the lose, don't really want to go to bed, as he was always waiting or heading me toward bed time. Very empty. What really made it hard was, as many of you know, he hasn't been active or moving much, but when the vet came (we were out side checking the mail) and started talking, the talked about putting him down, his head came up (he had been resting it on my shoulder) and he started yelling:( when we went inside, & the doc was feeling his kidney, and commenting on how dehydrated he was ( all the water he had been drinking went right through him) and I had him test him (no way in hell was I going to let him go without being 150% sure there was no other way) and the test confirmed and the doc used that word again, Carrera once again, stood up, screamed & wanted out of the chair. He was such a fighter, but I didn't want him to suffer either. I haven't slept but a few hours total since last week (if he would move, I would wake right up) and the last few nights, it was hourly trips to his box & water fountain, so sleep didn't happen:(

you should adopt a new pal.
Funny thing Ed, I never get a choice, they seem to pick me, and another guy (also black, his name is Cayman) came to me in June, but I will check the Safe Animal Shelter, as they had a Devin Rex (I use to have one) who had been abused and may be a hard one to find a family for, but I would take anyone else because of Carreras age and wanting to give him the attention he deserved. All my animals came & chose me (15 year old hippy weiner dog & 5 other cats) so I haven't been given a choice in the pst, & it doesn't look like I will in the future. What can I say, I'm a softy, and my anim,al masters know that.

Once again, thanks to all my PP brothers & sisters for being there for me, as it is very odd, after so many years not hearing Carrera tyell at me and move me towads the door.:(

trekkor 01-08-2008 09:02 PM

Byron, man, I'm sorry.
I'm glad you had so many years with that little guy.

We've had our differences, you and I, but on this occasion we stand together in sorrow.
I know how much our animal friends mean to us.
I know when you are ready, you will bring another one home.

Thanks for all the kind word & support guys & gals. Carrera is back, in his urn, watching over me.

Is that a good impersonator or is that really Vincent?

Sonic dB 01-12-2008 10:27 AM

Hopefully that is Vincent and not Carrera's mother
;)

seriously cute girl in the pic above....

RIP Carrera!

VINMAN 01-12-2008 12:25 PM

Im so sorry Byron:( Sucks to lose a longtime friend like that. Glad to hear hes back with you.

KFC911 01-13-2008 04:18 AM

Byron, I've just got to tell ya that you and Carrera aged a lot more gracefully than the "lady" :)! Sorry you had to go through this. I dug a grave for my "baby" (14 yr. old lab) yesterday...I don't know how much longer she has, but digging was easier now than it will be when "that" day comes.

Racerbvd 01-13-2008 11:09 AM

No, that isn't Lisa, and yes, Carrera aged more gracefully than I did:p His fur didn't change colors.

Just got my buddy back today from radioactive iodine treatment to shrink his thyroid...he is doing great, but dehydrated and drinking a lot of water..i have to give him subcutaneous fluids for the next couple of weeks and limit contact with him because he is radioactive.

i think he may even glow in the dark
