Heating Oil Prices

We got a delivery of heating oil today, as evidenced by the nasty little packet hanging on the doorknob when I got home. I was hesitant to open it, but just about crapped when I saw $3.50 per gallon. If I pay in 10 days. Otherwise, $3.60.

Fer chrissakes, I paid only $3.15 per gallon for a tank of premium in the car tonight. What's wrong with this picture? We live in a 115 year old Victorian, which we're gradually making more weather tight, but right now, our "mileage" ain't so great, and these prices are killer. And I haven't even heard the familiar yearly excuse from Oilco of "aw, gee, I guess we didn't make enough heating oil this year".

Who else heats their house with oil, and what are you paying per gallon? This really sucks.

I think gasoline might be a little more expensive if they delivered it in a truck to your house.

Last time I looked, heating oil came off the cracking tower a lot lower than premium gasoline.
But thanks for your reply.

check the distillate stocks, they're low compared to gasoline:

Diesel has become more popular in Europe, and we are competing against them.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

It costs much less to make heating oil than gasoline or diesel, but it offsets production. It still should be much less than gas. How much taxes are you paying on that heating oil, and how bug of a chunk is the middleman delivery service taking? I'm betting it's huge.
You can go to the DOE EIA website and see how much the wholesale price of that oil is in your area, if you're curious.

You are in the oil business if I recall correctly. Why does diesel cost more than gasoline?

My In laws recently upgraded their oil fired heater. Since they have natural gas running into their home I asked, "Did you get a NG furnace to replace the oil unit?".

Response: "No. The furnace guy said it was too dangerous to use in a home heater. We went with a more efficient, safer oil heater."

I just about $hit my pants.

Glad you asked...he thinks that I have a "personal vendetta" against him. Go figure. Simple questions must just befuddle some folks.

You need to find another oil company. I am getting a delivery today and paying $3.19/gal. I'm in the same area of the state as you, so you should be able to do better on pricing by shopping around. Liberty Oil usually has the best prices and I think they deliver in Clinton.

Yeah, haven't you seen those treasonous commercials with Joe Kennedy plugging Hugo Chavez's generosity?

Just what I was thinking. I should of used a different color font.

I wonder if there are stats on the popularity of the program....

I guess because we're good customers, our oil company is "nice" to us...we filled up before crude topped $100 per barrel. So, $3.10 per gallon on December 21st. We had double pane windows installed last summer. Also a heavier insulated front door. They help a bit.

They say a 20 acre stand of trees will grow enough wood to heat a typical house in perpetuity. Time to get a chain saw and a splitter?

Woodshed full...but I use the wood stove mostly during power outages. Plus, I live on 1 1/2 acres, not 20.

i use oil...but have a wood stove and that has just about paid for itself in 3 years...so now we only use the furnace to augment the wood stove, and for hot water (getting a gas water heater installed when i can afford it next month)
cord wood is not cheap
i am, paying $175 tomorrow for a cord...but that will last the winter i think

I think that owning 2 911's might tend to disqualify me from that program.

Not sure about your 2 911's or my '86 Carrera wide body but I had to fill up my son's Denali last week and ended up with a sub-prime.
