DVD to IPOD conversion

So, I must be getting old because I have an IPOD and I don't know everything about using it. I actually had to ask some folks in the office some of the basics just to get started. So, I've progressed and can use it reasonable well.

My wife now wants to convert DVD's to IPOD for use when she travels on planes, etc. So, how do I do this? I tried one and the copywrite stopped me from being able to perform the function.

So, who uses what software and how well does it work. I did a quick google search and there's a miriad of solutions out there. AVEX get's the highest recommendation but I get the feeling they are paying to be put at the top?

Can someone point me in the right direction? Someone who has done it before preferrably?

Mcihael

on the mac side, I rip the dvd with Handbrake. You can then create an m4v for ipod using Quicktime (might need the pro version - $29).

on a semi-related note, anyone have a good app for converting to flv files? (other than buying Flash). I tried a shareware one last week and it didn't work at all.

I guess I should clarify, I'm not a Mac user. This would have to be a Windows version.

Additionally, Handbrake for Windows states that it doesn't remove copywrite protection. Requiring an additional tool.

+1 on Handbrake for the PC. You will have to use a program like DVD Shrink to break the protection. Works great. Just ripped Bullitt last week. Handbrake will take a while though.

Sure it does. Choose Export to other formats then pick FLV from the dropdown.

You should install ffmpeg it gets you some useful codecs.

I'd also pay the $30 for a Quicktime Pro license.

I have QT pro. Have since there was a qt pro

Sorry, but there is no flv on the other formats pull down. Flc, yes, flv, no. Maybe you've got some other codec from somewhere else installed?

looks like I need this:

For FLV playback and export, you can download and install Perian (www.perian.org).

Perian is good. Also let's you run FRAPS video files.

I'm a codec whore, I grab everyone I can get my hands on.

Do you have the quicktime mpeg package?

Another useful one. Let's you work with mpeg2, m2v format, makes working in Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro much faster as they are native uncompressed and you don't need to constantly render footage as you make edits.

I tried videora and it converted successful one of ten DVDs I tried. Any other suggestions. Or do I need to download a bunch of different programs. If I found one that worked well. Meaning I put the DVD in, I click a button and it converts and it added to my IPOD playlist or something close to that I'd pay $20 or $30 for it.
