have you ever felt that you were the jinx? (warning:dead animal pic)

ok, i have hiked hundreds of miles at lake sonoma looking for pigs with a friend. archery hunting. we have seen bookoo pig sign, but never any pigs. i was supposed to go today with him again, but it was not to be so. my SO decided this would be the best day to get some paperwork filled out. i swear, coming back from the office, my buddy called. he whispered, "i got one". he ran across a herd of LOTS OF PIGS and.....

it is official, i am the jinx.

i am proud of him tho...

It must be the smell you give off that makes them want to hide. Either that or your blurting out, "I wana kill some pigs today" offends them.

Good for your buddy...tell him he's got good taste in bows...I've got a Matthews solocam too. I used to hunt my friends ranch there...$hitloads of deer there. Beauty countryside, keep an eye out for lions...there's some there.

Man, you need to go to Texas......My brother-in-law manages an oil tycoon's ranch there and he sees/shoots them all the time down there. They usually donate them as food to various charities.

Maybe you can talk your buddy into taking you back to the same spot. I am guessing they will be back.

Sounds delicious. I've never tried bow hunting. What happens if you shoot it or whatever it's called with an arrow, and it doesn't die? Do you poke it with another arrow? Just wondering. Not trying to sound insensitive, but how do you kill it if it's just laying there alive? I am getting hungry thinking about this.

Very Nice! thumbs up to the Switchback! the best bow I have ever owned.

No porkers here but would love to stick one some day! I understand the taste is an acquired one?

If it doesn't die, it usually is pissed off when it sees you again. It will come charge you and that's when you get another chance of killing it. (Ask me how I know!) But in the end it is all good and pork chops in the freezer. Of all the dead critters I bring home, the family loves the pork the best. BTW, you guys need to shed the "training wheels" on your bows

hahaha. ok, jinx is letting up. we ran across 50 pigs! maybe 5 adults, and the rest were cute piglets! i wasnt crazy about shooting a wet sow, so we let them walk. i did trail them up and down some rain slicked forest, hoping for a young sow, or small boar, but they all pulled a houdini on me and vanished. amazing.

then the fog came in and i got lost....damn.

I have always fancied boar hunting. First time was in Penang Malaysia when I was 12 at a family friend's rubber plantation. No pigs, lots of monkeys but we did not hunt them.

Next month I am going to go to Florida for a sword show and side track with a buddy and get some pig. No bow, probably a spear or pistol most likely the latter. The outfit there gurantees a kill for $100.

There was a hunter gored in his main vein (?) while pig hunting a few years back (CA). Bled to death before he could be rescued. Pig - 1, Hunter - 0.

Anyone (anti-hunters) who declare pig hunting with a bow "cruel", remember, the pig has a 50/50 chance of a kill, too!

Roman,
Haven't done any bow hunting personally, but I have heard that the hunter will carry a side arm to put it down if it isn't a clean kill. The boars are mighty aggressive. If a full grown boar was charging me I would definitely want to be a. shooting from a stand, or b. have a pistol.

I'm a little rusty on Cali bow hunting laws, but I think I remember that it was OK to carry a pistol when hunting and OK to use it for the second shot on large game, especially boar, bear... Or in case you were in danger.

Absolutely not ok to carry a pistol or any firearm in CA when bow hunting in a bow season. I wouldn't even take one it the vehicle. Pigs may be a bit different, as you may choose to hunt them with a bow even though gun is legal. Then you can of course carry whatever guy you like on top. There are areas that are bow only though and that means no gun - period. The pig I posted was killed in a depredation hunt that did not allow taking guns (close to housing).

Key is to not fall down. Hard to do when something comes running at you. Usually you will want to be close to a tree / branch, so you can pull yourself up when it comes running.

It is different from state to state. No problem. I am sure you'd check before you'd wander out there with a bow and gun! I like bow hunting deer better. Those guys at least don't come run you down.
