What engine is this?

Any know what engine this is? The valve covers scream VW, but I don't recognize the intake. Air cooled or water? The description is very misleading.

Where's the fan? Odd place for an alternator.

Got it - surprised to see such a troublesome motor in a repro Spyder.

Wasserboxers are horrid engines! They typically blow head gaskets at 60k miles...

That things going to have a turbo Subbie in it after he pulls the heads four or five times. My neighbors syncro westy has an Audi (smog legal in Ca) in it now.
