Venting about JW's....

I'm not here to tell anyone what to believe, but I have a patient in the hospital who will likely die because he is a JW and refuses to accept blood products. He came in for an elective surgery and got pneumonia post-operatively. He went onto the ventilator and we have been able to get him off the vent, fever down, etc. He is in kidney failure and will need dialysis soon. The only problem is that his hemoglobin today is 5.5 (normal is 14). That means he has lost about at least 6-7 units of blood since all this started. We are trying everything to get him to make his own red cells but he is just too sick. The family is ok with dialysis, but if we start dialysis his anemia will get much worse because some blood always stays in the machine after you finish dialysis...

He did not donate any blood prior to his operation either so we are stuck. It's just frustrating to go all this way and he will end up dying from something that is completely reversible...

Rick:

I do not know what to say, but your frustration is justified. Sometimes belief systems simply get in the way of good judgement, whether it be religion, politics or anything else.

This is very sad. I hope your patient survives, Rick.

Rapeing some one with your thoughts and "belives"is probably no better....some times with docters and lawers it all becomes a ego problem.. it is better to let some one die with their integrity intact then force them into our mold of thinking, we all are the same and yet very differant?? J.M.O.

Give it a rest, trekkor. Go knock on doors.

Once again, Rick, I hope it turns out OK.

I do not know. Maybe my thinking is all wrong, but if one believes in a Creator, and that Creator gave us the intelligence to find ways to preserve life, then what is the harm in using those methoods to save life? Yes, I also believe that a person should have a say in their ultimate end, but if the situation is "curable" with current technology, how can it be wrong? On the other hand, I also believe that it is morally wrong to preserve life if it is hopeless simply because it can be done.

I agree - let him go, but document the facts of the case thoroughly, so the 'tards don't try to sue you after the fact.

Fastpat was banned for telling Noah to go back to Isreal.

Well tyo stir the pot...down the hall in most hospitals there is an assambly line doing abortions...They have not a word to say about how they want to live... seems like we all get real emotional about wrong and right things

alf 01-09-2008 08:35 AM

It is his belief, his life and his choice.

stomachmonkey 01-09-2008 08:36 AM

If God created Man and Man created life saving technologies then is God not ultimately responsible for those technologies?

Same point I made in the other JW bashing thread yet, there was no response.

JW's do not get abortions so if you want to look at it from a big picture point of view they have nothing to do with the millions of babies being killed each year.

Perhaps it's a form of Darwinism at work.

Amen to that!

For those that don't recall the last big thread involved a young person. Moses had some input on the subject of bloodless medicine that was interesting.

For adults, i say make your choice and follow your heart. For youngsters, however, it stresses me. I see little ones getting indoctrinated all the time in EVERY religion and it's not good.

That's the first thing I thought of.

+1

I think the guy is a crack pot. But if the fool wishes to throw away his life based on some silliness, thats his business.

As a physician, all you can do it what your training and life experience has provided. Patients are never going to be completely compliant or respond the way one anticipates. Do what you can, and if he dies, dictate your notes and move on. Its not your problem.
