Any "Can't miss" things to do on Maui?

Any recommendations for things to do on Maui besides laying around on the beach?

I recently heard that was suspended. Some sort of accident on one of those tours. But you can still rent a bike one your own and ride down. Something like 27 pedal pushes to get you 16 miles to the sea?

The sunrise on Haleakala is pretty impressive. Well worth the effort.

First time I saw a black sand beach was at Hana. The drive was fun, too.

Suggestions above are spot on. Check out the high $ hotels in Wailea. Fish from the local fish markets. We'll be there Thursday for a week!

Forgot the many great restaurants. My favorite might be the seared Ahi tuna at David Paul's Lahaina Grill.

Morning cream puffs at Komodo's market, too.

I'll give you a CAN miss... snorkeling at Molokini. The boat cruise might be nice, but the snorkeling is actually better around Wailea.

The taco stand you pass on the road to Hana is really good.

If you like switchback turns you will be in heaven. Leave early, it's like a short distance but takes all day. Don't fall for those" 7 sacred pools". Pack a lunch and enjoy the view.

Agree on missing snorkling at Molokini. Overrated. You'll see more and it's a lot easier just going to Black Rock.

Road to Hana? That's another "can miss" for me. I'd never do that again. The road to nowhere. It's fun for the first 10 minutes, not much after that. And your passenger will hate it. Spending the better part of an entire day in a rental car is a big waste of a day on Maui, IMO.

I'm not a fancy restaurant fan, but my wife is, so I go. I have to admit, Mama's Fish House was spectacular. Right there on the beach, totally romantic, and the food was the best I've ever had. I was prepared to write it off as yet another overpriced mediocre meal, but was blown away. Expensive as hell, though.

Oh, go to the Hookipa lookout on a windy afternoon. You'll see some amazing surfers and windsurfers in 20ft waves.

Head over to the island of Molokai for a night or two and ride the mules. Definitely the most interesting and exciting thing I've done in Hawaii.

If the top of the volcano is in the clouds, don't bother going, it will be about 45 degrees and you'll have visibility of about 10 feet.

+1 We took a scuba trip to Molokini. It was fun, but very crowded and a fraction of the fish we saw off the lava flow outside our condo.

I think a mask, snorkel, fins and this map could keep me occupied for days. At "5 Caves" (#12) there were many sea turtles, but you do have to swim out a ways, as mentioned on the web site.

Road to Hanna was more like the road to hell for me. Almost got car sick. Way to many hours on switchbacks.

The "Road to Hana" should be done at least once. I've done it at least 4 times......Twice, I've gone on thru Hana and taken the road all the way around (where they tell you not to ake a rental car. Did it once on a rental and once on a friends (who lives there) former Police Harley that's painted pink and yellow....Did I get some looks????

Another "yes" vote for the Road to Hana. Don't be a wuss and go all the way around. The road gets pretty ahem, interesting past Hana, but the contrasts between the west and east side of the island are remarkable. Lush rain forest on the Hana side compared to stark desert like surroundings once you round the bend.

BTW, we did the whole thing in a rented Lincoln LS with myself driving and three passengers. The Jeep drivers sure gave us some strange looks; apparently they thought you really needed four wheel drive.

As for the car sickness aspect, I can't comment, as I was driving. Fun stuff

+1 - waste of a day in paradise.

Talk to the nice lady in the lobby of your hotel. She knows all the fun stuff to do. One tip, pass on the eco-snorkeling trip to Molokini. The whole freakin' ride back to port was eco-propaganda over a bad PA system.
