Why shouldn't I have to show an ID to vote?

Big court case going on now about this. Of course, the Dems want anyone with a pulse and even a few without one to be able to vote with no ID. Kind of ironic that some of their voters are too poor to afford a gov't. issued photo ID, but have no problem buying lotto tickets or filing for public assistance, which, I'll make the wild guess, requires some sort of ID. They didn't even stop when GA offered to issue the ID's free of charge! OTOH, no one can come up with an case of prosecuted voter fraud to demonstrate there's a real need for these ID's. Why do I need an ID to receive any kind of government service, indeed, even to enter a gov't. bldg., but shouldn't have to show one to vote? BTW, when I voted this past Nov. in state and local elections, I was asked for ID. If the SCOTUS shoots this one down, I hope I can start buying guns without an ID too.

Most public buildings I enter, I have to show a photo ID and sign in. If a problem comes up they want to know who was in their building.

Rick Lee 01-10-2008 12:40 PM

Hugh, try doing business in DC and you learn to keep the jewelry at home. I go through more metal detectors in a week of work than I do in airports in a whole year.

Dan in Pasadena 01-10-2008 01:18 PM

Rick, I'm "...a Dem" and I don't want "anyone with a pulse and even a few without one" to vote. A little broad brush?

I have no problem asking for legal identification to be given a ballot. I just don' want a modern day quasi version of poll taxes or things that are perceived as impediments to otherwise legal voters from showing up and exercising their right to vote. I don't think you want that either do you,... 'ya "Con"?:D

djmcmath 01-10-2008 01:27 PM

Seriously -- I saw this case and had to laugh. Actually, if I remember right from the transcript, one of the justices made an off-handed comment like, "Is the Supreme Court of the United States really wasting time on this?"

I won't try to pin it on Dems as a whole, but I'd say that the Dem-fringe (equivalent to, say, the Pat Robertson fringe of the other end of the spectrum) has gone of the stupid end this time.

mikester 01-10-2008 01:39 PM

the argument always seems to come down to asking for ID is tantamount to "voter intimidation" especially in lower income neighborhoods.

It is lame NOT to ask for ID. No, it isn't lame it is stupid. An ID card is a simple thing and should not be considered voter intimidation of the elderly and minorities which is why folks like the ACLU and other liberal civil liberties watch dog groups always raise their hackles at this sort of requirement.

The world is going to end - Rick and I are in lockstep on another issue.

Hey, knock off the reasonable, balanced comments will ya?:D

I highly doubt any but the "fringe-y's want illegals to vote but I wonder out loud about show this would apply to my 83 year old mother?

I don't know offhand if she ordered an absentee ballot, she should have. But if she didn't, I know she needs a ride to the polling place as she recently surrendered her driver's license and has not yet received a California I.D. card.

Ah hell, since she'll probably vote Republican, I'll just forget to pick her up!:D I'm kidding, I'm kidding! Geez, what a bunch of crouches!;)

ditto:D

We should be presenting ID and not only that but warrants and child support orders should be cleared up before voting. I don't mean DMV fines (;)) or silly things like that but hey, if you want a say in how this country is run you at least oughta be up to date on your child support and/or probation requirements!

Shaun @ Tru6 01-10-2008 01:59 PM

the Democrats have ID cards. the Republicans have Diebold.

Chocaholic 01-10-2008 02:08 PM

...and don't even get me started on hanging chads...

If you can't work a voting booth, how can you be expected to produce an ID card??? You are so insensitive.

I'm disgusted.

skipdup 01-10-2008 02:22 PM

Heck yes you should have gov't issued ID. What a STUPID case!!!

strupgolf 01-10-2008 02:24 PM

This case came from Indiana, and the Dem's are just livid that someone will have to show ID to vote. Hell, I went to the BMV today to get a driving record, and do you know, they had the gall to ask me "who I was". I could have said John Smith. It's really so simple folks. And these ID's are fricking FREE. But as you recall, at least you older ones, the voting in places like CHICAGO, where people dead for many years showed up at the polls. Give me a break, lets get on with whats important for this countryl .

Rick Lee 01-10-2008 02:40 PM

Dan, it's not a broad brush at all to say Dems want anyone with a pulse to be able to vote. If you don't have to show ID, then, quite literally, anyone with a pulse who looks to be 18 or older can vote. It's that simple - convicted felons, non-citizens and double voters would have no problem whatsoever. And those the Dems claim shouldn't be burdened with producing ID are likely to vote Dem anyway. How convenient!

If they don't exist already, I wouldn't be surprised to see vendors sprout up who sell lists of dead registered voters, so those who shouldn't be voting can just show up and use those folks' names and addresses.

Dan in Pasadena 01-10-2008 02:45 PM

My point Rick was "all" of any group, Democrat or Republican, don't "all" want anything. That's what's broad brush. That's categorical thinking and in my view lazy thinking.

As for wholesale voter fraud? It hasn't been proven to have happened yet. Not saying it couldn't but you are kidding yourself if you think only the left has a win-at-any-cost mentality. That's naive.

Rick Lee 01-10-2008 02:51 PM

Not sure about the IN case, but the DNC was a party to the lawsuit in GA. Be honest here - who has the most to lose and gain by letting anyone vote and making it illegal to ask for ID's? We all know the answer.

Hugh R 01-10-2008 03:00 PM

You need an ID to cash your SS and welfare checks. When I use a credit card 1/2 the time they want a photo ID. Show me a real live person in the US who is of voting age who honestly does not have a photo ID and tell me what the impediment is to their getting one.

The registered democrats should be required to show a picture ID, and the registered republicans should be required to show their american express card ;) j/k

Seriously, there are politicians out there that pander to the poor. They make lots of promises to the poor, saying that we will take care of you or we will give you all kinds of stuff for free or we will raise taxes on the rich and spend it all on the you. They typically all have the same party affiliation.
Those politicians are the ones who would prefer to let people without IDs vote because they will probably vote for them. They don't care if it's fraud as long as they win.
Loretta Sanchez, dianne feinstein, and Barbara Boxter all come to mind as examples but there are hundreds of others.

Now, politicians that belong to the "other " political party would probably do it too, except they know that the poor probably won't vote for them. That's because they promise to make people earn they own money and then let them keep a large percentage of it. Poor people don't like that. They want what someone else has so they vote for people who will take it away from the other guy and give it to them.

IMO A legal government-issued ID should be required to register to vote also. in fact it should be required to do anything in this country that remotely has to do with the government, including collecting benefits, getting medical care, and enrolling children in public schools.
