Am I the only one who likes Fruit Cake?

I think Fruit Cake gets a bad rap - I actually like it. we got one that was in a Harry and Davids Gift basket. Our lil Girl has so excited to try it but when she did she quickly spit it out saying "Dad, how can you eat this stuff! "

I have never met anyone who actually likes it besides me but that can't be the case because companies still make it.

BTW - I have been to the Claxton Fruit cake factory on Texas so I know for sure that these cakes are not recycled!

Tried several in my life and only found one that I really thought tasted good.... on that note I am not willing to try them all again to figure out which brand it was....

I like the kind that is shaped like a square bar, about 8"x1.5"x1.5" but haven't seen any around for the last several years. More like candy than cake. Never figured out what the oscilloscope trace green little chunks of fruit are - anyone know?

I've had a few different brands of fruitcake over the years but didn't much approve of them - too "cake-like" for my fruitcake taste.

The measurements I just gave are only approximate (sorry). Bear in mind that it's been several years (as I mentioned) since I've had any and that I am not usually so imprecise or speculative regarding physical measurements of things, especially fruitcake in particular (which, for some reason, strikes me as something which, if measured, should be done precisely then recorded and kept in a safe place).

I once had the opportunity to visit the Claxton Fruitcake Factory mentioned above. I did NOT go, nor will I EVER go if the opportunity ever again arises....EVER!

Not a Claxton fan, but I really do love the ones from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana! They are a 50 year tradition with me! And you "skeptics" must not judge a good cake by the square "wanna-be's"

AHA! That's just it for me...a fruitcake should not resemble "a good cake" - IT'S FRUITCAKE FOR GOD'S SAKE!

As far as the "square wanna-be" crack, well, keep in mind that pi are not square and it is perfectly acceptable when cake are square.

Sheesh, this board really gets to me sometimes. I apologize.

My dad has made massive quantities of fruit cakes every year at xmas to give to family, friends and clients. I really like it, so does he. My wife and her family hate it, except for her grandmother, who loves it. So those who like it are few and far between, but there are indeed some!

I've always thought of it as the present that always goes straight to the garbage, or gets re-gifted immediately

The one from Harry and Davids is round with pecans and the mystery round green someting on top. Our lil Girl asked me what it was and I told it was candied fruit. When she asked me which fruit I said it was a trade secret - nobody really knows except the makers and they ain't saying. She seemed to really like the answer but not the fruit cake...

I guess this is in the same arena as true Mintz Meat Pie which I like but many people do not.

My Pennsylvania Dutch Grandfather makes fruitcakes for us every year, and I love them. His are made in a breadpan and the "cake" is more similar to a very dark and moist banana bread or date bread.

Can't say I've ever tried another kind of fruitcake, but Grandpa's are the best.

I'm with Mike. Slice it just like bread, toast it, and put some butter on it. Yummy on a winter day.

No you're not!

My Mum makes the most fantastic fruit cake ever. I think if you get a bad one you will be scared for life and most store bought stuff is crap. Her best fruit cake is at Christmas. That cake gets made a coupke of months in advance and gets 'watered' regulalrly with congnac in between it's creation and Christmas.

If you think you don't like fruit cake but are prepared to be converted head over to my parents place next December.
