Summary: Don't buy a standard Cayman. Buy an S or forget about it.

For that money or a little more, you can get some serious other cars. Add ten grand and you can get a nice low mileage TT 993 that will be worth the same in 5 years.

You already have a boxster. You must be used to the plastic feel already. ;) The standard cayman won't do much else for you. I have to say, however, the S cayman is impressive. I instructed in one in AX and it has plenty of power, nice brakes and basically goes just where you point it ...

if it handles as well-balanced as a boxster, it must be fun. and i happen to like those wheels on that car, and i usually don't like that style.

KFC911 01-24-2008 09:57 PM

You're a "kept man" who deserves an "S" :)

911Rob 01-24-2008 10:36 PM

Go 4 it!

charleskieffner 01-25-2008 03:22 AM

DO IT! this is yer concious..................DO IT! hope its the "S" 171mph turnkey outta da box. brand new here in snobbsdale i think was $56,000 for base model.

damn reasonable in todays market and 171 mph at any track will fer sure have yer bunghole on pucker "10" and yer eyelids peeled back behind yer ears!

DO IT! you only live once!

watched them at the last PCA meet at firebird. guy i met from tucson bought a red one and had owned quite a few porsches in the past and spanked the pants outta it on the track with some good michelins and had a really cool time opening it up.

i'd buy one in a heartbeat.

targa911S 01-25-2008 03:32 AM

Does it come with a matching purse?

turbo6bar 01-25-2008 04:20 AM

The Gayman rocks. ;) I would buy it if I was ready to part with the peso.

Ooooooooh, that's an interesting point. Cayman vs 993TT, now THAT is a tough choice. I say 993TT, don't know how I could ever turn one of those down.

berettafan 01-25-2008 05:09 AM

not a doubt in my mind that long term the 993 would be the cheaper car to own (owing to depreciation).

what a nifty thought that was aigel!

HardDrive 01-25-2008 07:00 AM

I actually would rather have a 996TT. But in these parts, they are still $70K+.

aigel 01-25-2008 07:24 AM

Sounds like you don't "need" a car. So, save up for another year and wait for the TT to come down some more, work on the wife some more and you are in business. Would you rather own a 10 year old supercar or a newish entry model from a supercar manufacturer??? ;)

171 mph sure is the last thing that makes you want to buy a Cayman. Where are you going to run that? The handling is a different story. But again, on the base model, you already have it all in the boxster. Also, The normally aspirated 1996+ 993 can do 171 too. ;)

You can also start shopping in the Bay Area. Seattle isn't far and prices should be lower here. It just isn't an impulse buy then, walking on the lot. A good thing, IMHO.

onewhippedpuppy 01-25-2008 07:29 AM

Yeah, regardless of what you buy, it's often worth a plane ticket for the right car. If Seattle is high, look elsewhere. No doubt you'd find plenty of willing test-drivers for a 993TT.:D

dd74 01-25-2008 07:38 AM

Why are the prices so much higher in Seattle?

OMGROFL!!!

Dude, you have to warn before you post stuff like that. I damn near choked on my bagel. . .

911teo 01-25-2008 07:50 AM

Buy it. Paul is right in 2-3yrs it will be 20k cheaper BUT

- the driving pleasures the car will give u in the next 2-3 years is priceless
- looking at the way the mkt is behaving there is no guarantee that your savings will NOT be worth 20k less too in 2-3 years

Go for it. If you do not like it you can always sell it. The car has already gone through its worse depreciation cycle.

911Rob 01-25-2008 08:26 AM

Weigh out your options with a 993 purchase; the interiors are more spacious and they're sure not to depriciate as much as a brand new Cayman. Some excellent buys on 993s right now!

If you're gonna take the Cayman plunge, get the turbo or S though, IMO FWIW.

$56,000 for a 993 TT? Maybe, if it has big-time miles on it. A quick check of 993TT's on autotrader revealed asking prices signifigantly higher. Granted they are asking prices...

If you must buy a Cayman, get an S in anything but silver. Is that the only color Porsche uses on their cars these days?

porsche356a 01-25-2008 09:01 AM

Btw, are there any Seattle events anytime soon?

I figure if HardDrive is my Porsche neighbor, I should meet him.

NICKG 01-25-2008 09:08 AM

they are 10k off sticker here in nj (cayman's that is)
