In July 2004, I was on a project in West Texas and was fortunate to get an afternoon to spend at the CAF museum. I was virtually alone in the hanger and the B-17 was pulled out for a ceremony. I had free access all around it. Just wish I'd had a better camera.

Off Topic, but:

I saw a plane that I could not identity - maybe you could help.

I think it used to hang out at JWA. Black, twin radial engines, looks kinda like a P-38 from the front, but much larger and I think it hand a single boom/tail. Any ideas?

P-61 maybe? The "Black Widow" night fighter

Thanks - but that one has a much larger cockpit "greenhouse" than the one I remember. Plus, this hting had big radials on the front.

Maybe an F7F Tigercat? Sorry I can't post a picture- but they are large, two person twin radial with extended nacelles and a single tail.

I've see them at airshows (Oshkosh etc.) and they are much more impressive than pictures show.

Very cool!

Based upon when it was built (and knowing very little about these things) I'm surprised they didn't use in-line engines.

I fell in love with them when I first saw one. I'm surprised they don't get more press.

Me too. Sometimes I just hang at the airport and just look at my baby. Yeah, I am nuts, but I think the pilots out there know what I am talking about, right Tim. Sorry I missed OSH this year. No T6 flying with my new business start up in full swing. Hope you had fun.

Hey if you guys want to see warbirds all year, buy the latest Air To Air calendar by Paul Bowen. If you have not seen his work, it is second to none. Besides, yours truly is the February "Playmate."

Nope,

Fire bomber is a Lockheed Neptune... Tigercats were used as fire spotters but now a bit to valuable to use in that fashion...

Ahh the B17.

My favorite B17 story is Old 666. The one Captain Zeamer and his crew took up and shot it out with 17 Zeros for over an hour.
