WOW! You've finally demonstrated you don't really need mother's help. Oh...wait...did the $1.50 come from your trust fund?

Damn...mother is still responsible for your wealth:D

MBAtarga 01-30-2008 02:58 PM

Did they have any of those black velvet Elvis pictures?

pwd72s 01-30-2008 03:10 PM

Good luck Tabby...may this turn out to not be another shotgun....

tabs 01-30-2008 03:18 PM

For $1.50 I can't go wrong... its worth a few $$$ even if it is wrong. If it is right I am just as shocked as everybody else. I never thought it would be that good.

I was telling the people at the store the other day that I never find any really good art in a Goodwill store. If it works out boy do I have a story to tell.

Shadetree930 01-30-2008 03:32 PM

Don't spend that money yet. It looks like a print to me. Would make for a great story if true but I am not banking on the happy ending.

Believe me I have been around the block with art. Its a real Oil on Canvas. As I have said before there is more money left lying around in art than anything else. Someone doesn't like the painting, or it looks cheesy, can't read the signature, its dirty or even unsigned, and it can be worth real bank.

A friend of mines daughter had a painting of a Pineapple on a table dated 1888, by Guy Rose. she hated it, kept it under the bed. Called up Morans and had them come out to look at some furniture and a coupla paintings she wanted to get rid of. Moran comes out and is looking at the painting and is wondering out loud who "C Rosa" is when she tells him her Great Uncle was Guy Rose. His eyes got real BIG. I saw that painting sell ffor $170,000.00 at Morans. The man standing in back of me bought it. If I had known a few months earlier I coulda bought that painting for a coupla grand from her.

Another small 8 x 10 painting by Granville Redmond that was so dirty that you could hardly tell what the scene was, was bought at a Yard sale in San Gaberial for $10. The guy who bought it didn't even know what he had till he got home and checked the signature. Jeff Moran showed me the painting before it was cleaned. It sold for $8900 at auction. It was a scene of Catalina Island.

I saw a American Impressionist painting that I didn't think much of at Abels Auctions a few years back. A week later I found out that Pete Sampras dad and another dealer that I knew got into a bidding war over it. It went for 23K. The dealer took it to a Art Gallery in Beverly Hills and sold it for 60K the next day. The dealer framed and cleaned it and put it up for sale at 150K.

I got an e-mail this evening from Mother in Tucson, the gal who got the 170K for the painting passed away while have a quadruple bypass operation.

Shaun @ Tru6 01-30-2008 08:13 PM

does your new Hamaguchi give good hugs?

tabs 01-30-2008 08:53 PM

Dam an I allready spent the money

Looks like you can call me Dreamin Jeffy Smith. After looking at the stuff done by Yozo Hamaguchi his style was totally different then the painting that I have, thus no 20K. I have old records of a Kazo Hamaguchi who sold a painting for 11,000 FRF in 1997, however I don't have an example of his work to reference. However should I really care, looks like 200 bucks on Ebay. Still not a bad return for $1.50.

I will say one thing about the painting I have it is well done, and thats the reason I bought it. So I have to check with a coupla Galleries to make sure.

tchanson 01-30-2008 09:26 PM

It will still match my ugly sofa.

Use the (theoretical) coupla hundred bucks from an eBay sale to replace the dry rotted tires on the '69 S and roll that thing into the light of day, Theodore.

It yearns to breathe free.

mother will be mad that you spent your lunch money. just tell her the bullies took it.

RickM 01-31-2008 04:57 AM

Good eye. So, did you know this artist when you discovered it or did you use a reference book or other info source? Any sites that list artists you can recommend?

tabs 01-31-2008 11:11 AM

I didn't know who the artist was when I bought the painting. It just spoke to me and said that I should take it home, because it was good. I was thinkin a coupla hundred. When I looked up the artist I had a case of irrational exuberance, which when I started looking closely at what Yozo Hamaguchi had done didn't match what I have. However there is another Hamaguchi that has sold for a fair amount of money, but I don't have a piece to reference. Me thinks it is going to go up on E-bay and let the market figure out what it is worth.

The one thing all the West LA antique and art dealers repected me for when I was going to Abels was my eye for quality and the corresponding value.

So what IRS form do you use to report this? What agent do I forward this post? (pending a donation to my paypal account)

No, but with the profit that Tabs just made off of the painting on Ebay, bet that in Vegas he can get a lot more than hugs! :)

Porsche-O-Phile 02-17-2008 02:54 AM

Hey, give me back my painting!

Am sure that the winner on Ebay will be glad to sell. Something over $200 is a good place to start.

Mule 02-17-2008 07:30 AM

Sell it & buy some decent cigars.
