Ram 5.7L Hemi Hype or Hell?

While carousing the dealership looking for an SUV I stumbled onto a Regular Cab SWB 5.7L Hemi Ram 1500. Keep in mind I hate the under powered non steering 00' Ram I have but is this a different animal? 345HP and good reviews? Solves both my towing and need for speed in one fell swoop. Opinions needed.

According to HOT ROD, the current "hemi" is a well designed engine. But that's the history of MOPAR from way back...good engines and drive trains, not so good in body & trim.

As an old MOPAR man myself, I have to agree with Paul. Fantastic powertrains, but the rest - Mostly Old Parts And Rust...

I've driven it. It's great! Go for it. You should know that the 5.7 isn't really a hemi, though, even tho it's really a nice engine.

I've heard that before "not a real hemi." Awfully close though. This is the 5.7 head. Not has "hemi" as say a 911 head but a pretty big change from the typical pushrod V8 head design we see for american engines. angela

I have an '04 Quad Cab Ram 1500 with a 5.7L hemi. It is a nice truck and a great engine. Lots of power and quick for a truck that is that big and heavy. Hauls well, too. I haven't had any problems with it. The hemi motor is interesting. They are twin plugged, with individual coils for each cylinder. An extra plug wire connects to the coil on the other side of the block, so each of the 16 plugs is fired by its own coil. Terrible gas mileage, though. I do a lot of stop and go driving, and am averaging around 11 mpg. Mine does not have the mutiple displacement system. That should help the mileage.

I can get 22 mpg with the cruise set @ 70 in my wife’s 5.7 MDS HEMI Aspen. Goes like snot for a 5k lb truck, and will pull a freight train. So far, it is a bullet proof rig.

Loved the 5.7 in my Grand Cherokee, but like was pointed out earlier the gas mileage sucks. 11-12mpg around town and 18mpg on the highway.

It's their trademark (and they can use it how they like), but to generations of hot rodders, drag racers, and stock car racers there was, and will always be, only one Hemi. Whatever the hell Dodge chooses to call this thing, it ain't it.

From what I understand, the new "HEMI" was designed from the ground up based off the 911 "hemi" design.
