Ship experts - is that underwater proboscis sticking out in front of the bow for ballast or stability or what?

I'm no ship expert, but the bulbous bow actually improves top speed and reduces drag. At least that is what Wikipedia says:

I hear a couple a week. We live kind of in the landing path of Cable airport (So Cal).

As for small prop planes, they are fairly loud.

In order (IMO):

- 152/172/182 etc
- Twins
- Long E-Z
- Skymaster (Mixmaster!) Push/Pull

Just my casual observation.

FWIW, I love to watch them fly over.
