A look at the 1981 Volkswagen Auto 2000 concept [update]

The guidelines also specified that the prototypes had to be able to comfortably carry four adults and 400 kilos (881 pounds) of luggage, while performance, size and reliability had to be at least on par with similarly-sized cars sold new at the time. The Federal Ministry for Research and Technology invested 110 million Deutschmarks to help fund the project.

Mercedes wasn’t the only West German automaker that participated in the project: Volkswagen introduced its take on what form a futuristic, highly fuel-efficient car should look like at the 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show. Riding on a modified Golf platform, the Auto 2000 boasted tall, fastback-like silhouette with a wide C-pillar, a glass hatch and a truncated rear end. Up front, the radiator grille was replaced by a sizable air dam discreetly integrated into the bumper, while 13-inch steel wheels fitted with full wheel covers reduced drag.

The Volkswagen Auto 2000 concept remained a design study that was never seriously considered for mass production by the automaker’s top brass. However, the third-generation Passat that was introduced in 1988 borrowed several styling cues from the futuristic show car.

News: Volkswagen confirms Bus-inspired EV coming in 2022
Posted on August 20, 2017 by Ronan Glon

Quote:

Volkswagen has toyed around with the idea of bringing back the emblematic Bus for the past 16 years. Four concept cars later, the company has finally confirmed plans to launch a retro-inspired van in 2022. The yet-unnamed model will take inspiration from the I.D. Buzz design study introduced earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show..................

The I.D. Buzz will ride on the modular MEB platform Volkswagen is currently developing to underpin an array of electric vehicles, including an oh-so-popular crossover and a hatchback that will replace the e-Golf. The MEB underpinnings means the van will be electric-only; Volkswagen won’t offer gasoline- or diesel-powered variants of it. A single rear-mounted electric motor and rear-wheel drive will come standard, while optional all-wheel drive will be available by installing a second electric motor over the front axle.

They have one thing in common, they all look more dangerous to the driver than what they already have (April 1st post hey?).

As if that isn’t enough, Lonestar also put up the highest trap speed ever (186 mph). This unit resembles a top fuel dragster and is powered by four electric motors that make 8,000 amps combined. It can go from 0 to 60 in just 1-second. I don’t know about you but this technology stirs my curiosity.

“Big Daddy” Don Garlits and the SR-37 “Quest for 200 MPH on Batteries” EV Dragster will take to the test track at 10am on 4.30.2014 in a private session at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, FL. The much-anticipated full systems test of the stunning completed dragster will take place on the recently resurfaced ¼ mile dragstrip of the beautiful and historic Bradenton facility...................

The fully integrated powerplant will produce a peak power of 1500 kilowatts – in excess of 2000HP – and will launch Big Daddy nearly as quickly as a Top Fuel dragster.....................

In preparation for the test, the 82-year old Garlits brings the project full-circle, “It has been over two years now since the idea for an attempt to reach ‘200 MPH on Batteries’ in a dragster came to mind. Several times the project seemed stalled, but due to the wonderful team effort, we were able to continue.

lemme know when they can make a golf cart with 12,000 hp that can go zero to 100 mph in .8 seconds and hit 280 mph in 600 feet, 338 mph in 1000 feet.
Then we'll start talking records.

Plus the fact that no one will care enough to watch (or sponsor) a quiet electric dragster.

We are witnessing electric vehicles breaking all sorts of records on land, sea and in the air.

I suspect you will not have to wait very long.

Electric motors produce 100% torque at zero RPM and this makes them quicker off the line compared to a piston-engined vehicle of the same power. Since Battery Technology has improved a great deal during the 1980s to present, the performance gap between piston-engined & electric-motor vehicles has narrowed.

Dragsters, 1/4 mile

The current record is held by Don Garlits. The QF200 dragster[8] broke the previous record of the "Current Eliminator" on August 10, 2014 with a 7.274 second ET at 185.60 mph in the 1/4 mile DR/A3 class set at Bradenton Motorsport Park in August 2014.[2] Powered by a 1.5 MegaWatt battery built by Derek Barger of High Tech Systems LLC.[9]

The previous record for an electric rail dragster is the "Current Eliminator" owned and driven by Dennis Berube of Phoenix, Arizona. It current holds the NEDRA World Record in the DR/A3 class at 7.956 seconds ET in the quarter mile at 159.85 MPH. This record was set at Southwestern International Raceway in Tucson Arizona on December 30, 2007.[2]
