I count more than four masts. Just saying.
|
thanks jolly ! joe.... there are two ships docked... . but you knew that..

Plus neither of the ships in the enlargement are schooners. The four masted vessel is a barque (three masts square rigged, mizzen fore and aft rigged) The second vessel is ship rigged (square rigged on all three masts).
The vessel to starboard of the forward ship is possibly a four masted schooner. Best Les |
This is a four masted schooner.

I remember many years ago there were two 4 masted schooners derelict along the coast of Maine at Wiscasset. I suppose they are long gone by now.

Big heavy weight with torque on top. Skinny boat. Not good in high seas. |

High seas? That's why you reef some of the sails. No problem. |

RE. schooners. These boats sat very low in the water also.. especially when loaded with 100 tons of grain or wood. They in general were not very tender at all. BTW. most of them only sailed downwind also., In fact they needed huge amounts of ballast in the hold,.. usually just rock, ( in the absence of cargo...) the ballast was dumped in the harbors prior to loading. in fact here in philadelphia and the delaware river, these huge piles of ballast on the sea/river floor form the best places to fish nowadays.. ...many of us have "rockpile coordinates" in our gps .
