That was a real 904 with a long race history. My friend Bruce and I talked to him for 10 minutes, he showed us some of the car's history. It was once a mule at LeMans to get the gearing right for the others cars, but did not race that race.

The air intake was a little rough on the outside lip, and very rough inside the porting. Were all original cars like this, or was this repaired after a race?

I think he said that it has the original 4 cyl in it now, but he has a period correct 6 cyl he might be putting in it.

He was very warm in this car, it does not need heat exchangers - no engine insulation means he cooks.

The windshield surround rubber shows this cars real age. I think that perhaps the headlamp covers have been replaced/restored - the car is clean and awesome.

I think Alex has done a nice job to not over-restore his 904. It has a great patina and looks pretty much like it would have 30 years ago. In general, Porsche racecars of the 60s/70s were crude when it came to most everything other than the mechanicals. Made to go fast only. Nobody cared what they looked liked. These cars are worth so much money now that they are all grossly over-restored and bear almost no resemblance to what they looked like 'in the day'.

This 917 was raced at Spa in 1971 and then parked. It has remained untouched since then. This is what they really looked like up close:

Cool old Wagon.... Not sure what makes it "sporty" though...

911boost 04-19-2010 12:39 PM

I agree Sidney, it definitely isn't the handling! Maybe the big block under the hood?
