The prophet in christian art

I recently spent a few days playing tourist in Bologna. One of the sites I visited was the basilica of san Petronio. It is a fascinating ecclesiastical building. It was originally intended to be even bigger than the Vatican until the pope got wind of the project and ordered it scaled down. It also has a meridian line lit by the sun at noon, marked with the signs of the zodiac (very non pc in religious terms) and the famous fresco depicting the prophet Mohamed getting toasted in hell. This last is not very popular with muslims who have made threats. There are very obvious undercover cops on duty outside.

Very beautiful art depicting a large array of motivating grotesque threats of what will happen if you donīt follow the ordered religious line. Good stuff! I need to go back to Italy soon for another full doses of great architecture and art.
