Board Nazi

Guys, this is a tech forum, not a cheat carfax forum. If you need a carfax, pony up the $10 and get one yourself. Please don't do this again.

Personally I see absolutely nothing wrong with one Pelican helping another with a carfax report. If someone pays for 30 days of reports, where is the rub?
We borrow and lend tools all the time; therefore I fail to see the issue.
Am I to believe that I am guilty of cheating Pelican Parts if I borrow someones' ball joint removal tool? If I follow this bizzare logic, it sure makes it sound like it.
Just as long as the info is emailed directly to the requestor, and not posted on the board, all should be well. BTW, there are plenty of off topic posts riddled throughout the 911 Tech Forum.
That being said; who pi$$ed on Noah's Cherrio's this morning?!?

Big difference between loaning tools and "stealing" CarFax reports...CarFax states in its EULA that its' information is not to be "shared" without payment. Therefore, that makes it (sorta) illegal. Our host, the owner of this website, chooses not to participate in facilitating an illegal transaction. It could come back to haunt him if CarFax ever decides to pursue websites who freely allow the "theft" of their services. It is akin to downloading/sharing .mp3's. There have been many lawsuits and cash paid out in those instances.

I do not recall signing/agreeing to such a EULA the last time I was at Sears buying a wrench.

Those reports are worthless anyway, imo. I had a Carfax done when I bought my '84 3 1/2 years ago and it reported nothing out of the ordinary. All was good.

Ah...

Hmm, shame on me for believing it, as the car had been in a pretty good wreck in its life and stupid me (at the time) didn't get a PPI done and I didn't know what to look for myself. Next time I buy a car, I'll do it the way I bought my 996. I'll look it over very, very carefully myself, and then if I like it, it'll have a thorough PPI done by a shop I use or, if out of the area, a reputable, well respected shop recommended by people here on this board.

I can see how that word could be offensive to some. I take it to mean irrational.

it appears that nine9six may want to conspire to steal from and otherwise defraud carfax. can't find any fault with wayne, or noah for that matter, for not wanting this board to be used as a tool in such a conspiracy. unfair to call noah a nazi for that. maybe someone should inform carfax of nine9six's activities so that they can contact the appropriate authroities and take the appropriate measures to give him what he deserves. a size 15 boot up the ass.

IIRC, the contract you purchase with carfax allows YOU unlimited use for a certain period of time. it does not say you can pass it around and share with others, in fact I'd bet it says just the opposite, that you are not licensed to share it with anyone.
If you do that, you are in breach of contract. Basically stealing.
If the pelican board is used to facilitate those illegal actions, then pelican could be liable also. It makes perfect sense for pelican to stop this kind of thing to keep our actions from causing them trouble.

Asking for, borrowing, sharing Carfax tools via Pelican Parts is not allowed.

Complaining about it won't change this rule. It is in place in order to protect Pelican Parts. I am sure that Wayne would rather not spend his time and effort going to court because some bonehead decided that he could use Pelican Parts to obtain carfax reports illegally.

End of story.

-Z-man.

PS: Pissing off moderators isn't going to win any battles here either...

Obviously, Wayne can't permit that.

BUT... it is by no means clear that this is "stealing" or "illegal" - what it IS, is a contract violation. The writer of the contract will usually put some penalty clause in their contract ("we won't let you ever use our service again" or "you agree to pay double if caught" etc.).

There may be some states that have passed laws to make this illegal or say that i constitutes fraud, or what have you, but barring that those terms are too strong.

So who is the dumb one, the person who steals something that is incorrect 1/2 the time or the person who pays for it?

Every time I have ever seen a post requesting a Carfax it's always seemed really cheap and low class to me. Just my two cents...

The forum rules are pretty clear on the subject. I certainly don't see any ambiguity in them.

Pony up your 20 bucks you cheap S.O.B.

I asked Wayne for clarification of the "carfax request" view.

"Originally Posted by Wayne at Pelican Parts

Wayne does have to take precautions in order to be able to have and provide this website, at no costs to us. This is Wayne's baby, and I can respect his rules. I know that I certainly would not want to have to try to locate, the vast knowledge that is available to us, elsewhere!

Now that I've read the entire thread, can I change my vote?

It was good to see all the different angles and replies to this thread...
However, If I purchase a carfax subscription report for 30 days, I am free to use it to search on any VIN I choose. This comes directly from CARFAX!!!

What is illegal, is to post or share the login and password. Of course this was not the issue or topic of the thread. I stated up front that it is known that carfax reports ARE NOT to be posted on this board.

There are an awful lot of dealerships that use their carfax subscription for exactly this purpose; and guess what? Its totally LEGAL and understood to be so.
While I completely respect Wayne, his administrators, and Pelican Parts BBS position on posting carfax reports, I totally disagree, and am backed by Carfax themselves on the purpose and understanding of a "subscription", and these folks perception on the illegality of using ones subscription, other than for only the cars the subscriber is truely interested in.

All personal feelings aside; the key in all this is that, by producing a report for personal use or for a freind(s) or group, is completely legal as long as the "report subscription" (Login & Password) is not sold, posted, or passed around. "Can only be used by the subscription holder"

BTW, regardless how anyone feels about it being "cheap" to ask for someone to do a carfax report, there have been many respected members here who have requested this favor. Aren't we all cheap by posting and sharing information on this BBS? Why not take your cars to a qualified mechanic, and stop being so freaking cheap, by looking to fix it yourself?
END OF STORY, POST, DEBATE.

I object to the use of Nazi...Hell, Wayne used the term "Smog Nazi"....which is what I do for a living.

As to carfaxes? Who gives a fuch, they are worthless...you can't depend on them. Garbage in, garbage out.
