Construction of the new museum of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is running at full speed. "This is the most spectacular construction project in our Companys history," said Anton Hunger, head of Press and Public Relations at the sports car manufacturer, and also responsible for the museum project. The shells of both basements and the first floor have now been completed. Work on the second floor and the three supporting concrete cores, which will bear the dynamically designed, apparently floating exhibition body, is progressing rapidly. A total of around 21,000 cubic centimeters of concrete and 4,000 tons of concrete reinforcement have already been laid.

It's about time. Plenty of other car museums dwarfed Porsche's for a long time. The dealership across the street from the factory had a better museum than the factory one.

So.....it's not worth the time to visit until the new museum is open (allegedly) sometime next year?

Not a special trip, mind you, just was thinking of swinging by while near Stuttgart.

It's always worth swinging by - particularly if you can get on a factory tour - but the current museum is a joke. A bad joke. I know a few people whose garages are bigger than the current museum. Of course you can buy posters, key fobs and caps - but it's all pretty bush league.

I should have taken pictures to share, but I was there just a few weeks ago.

It looks like it is going to be BIG ! The current museum is tiny.

What I saw was a several story metal (interior) frame of the building with the general shape of the building in the picture above. Change that, I looked again at the picture, and the big trapezoid shaped building part looked somewhat the same, but not the way is is attached to the groud. Maybe it will end up that way though...

They have a long way to go, but it's looking good so far !

You can get on a factory tour by either contacting PCNA or the factory itself (I have the email address of the nice lady that arranges tours). Schedule plenty in advance, ask for the English tour. Well worth it!

I like the sound of that, could you PM me the address if you're hesitant about just putting it out there?

"21,000 cubic centimeters of concrete" Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that 21 cubic meters, which is close to 21 cubic yards, that's hardly enough concrete for a slab in a 1,500 sq. ft. house. Neat looking building by the way.

I was there two weeks ago and at the 10 AM tour you could have just showed up, there were plenty of extra headphones. They show final assembly, leather cutting gluing and engine assembly. No painting or bodywork.

The Porsche tour/museum is free. Also in Stuttgart is the Mercedes museum which is 8 euros (4 if you have a student id). When the Porsche museum is complete (lots of finishing work left) I bet it will be a money making enterprise like Mercedes.

The BMW museum in Munich is pathetic and I think cost 2 euros. The BMW factory tour was 6 euros (3 if you have a student id).

I asked Klaus Ludwig about this at RRIII and he said it was going to be great. Based on what I've read it sounds like it will be opening sometime in late 2008.

While the current museum is very small and with a limited number of cars it is still worth it based purely on the historical value alone.

I'll be making another trip in a few years and definately plan on going back !

21,000 ccs of concrete is 1,281 cubic inches, or the amount of concrete that could occupy the same space as the air consumed by ONE revolution of three 427-cubic-inch engines.

It's going to be a small museum indeed.

I hope they make some sort of announcement when it's completed.

Interesting design - not what I'd have expected they'd go for in terms of aesthetic choices, but interesting.

I would question how much the architectural expression of that building really says about Porsche as a company, their heritage, etc. however. . . It seems kind of arbitrary. Interesting, but arbitrary.

I'd go if it meant getting to see REALLY rare stuff, like an uncracked 944 dash.
