I'll bet you had some influence on the type of car he purchased though?
I honestly tried not to. But I think having the 911 made him decide to forgo another BMW.

Capt...we (and I am sure many other folks here) are lucky: My Father just turned 78 and still rides his motorcycle 3/4 times a week when he is not in his '92 RX-7 he bought new:cool:

Attitude is the elixir of life. He and his 70 something buddies do a five day, five peak ride in the Rockies every year. They may ***** about the little things, but they get the big picture. Thats my plan.

JCF 02-18-2008 12:57 PM

Just curious speeder, what put you over the edge ?
Paul is not the most obnoxious poster around here (by a long shot) - he's a well known quantity. Take him or leave him.
If you are going to be the new sheriff in town does that mean you will take on the rest of the malcontents as well every time they post something that tastes sour to you ?

Good for the old pilot - I've been trying to talk my Pop into the seat of a new Porsche but he can't see spending that much money for a car.
I let him drive my old 911 whenever he is around though - maybe it spoiled him for the newer, overweight plastic Porsches they make now...;)

speeder 02-18-2008 02:24 PM

JCF, he pissed on the thread. If you didn't get the vinegar in his snide comment, I don't know what to say. When someone pulls up in their new car, (or posts pictures of it on a forum), I don't care if it's a ******* Hyundai, only an ass hole knocks the car.

"If you don't have anything nice to say, STFU..."

Haven't you ever heard that one? I don't care if you like it or not, you don't ***** on someone's feelings when they show you their new car (or anything) that they just spent all of their $$ on. You don't do it. Unless you've got a real anal/cranial inversion problem. I've seen haters do this move all my life, it's a sign of horrible character IMO. Put someone down just because you can. When you could have just STFU.

And on top of it, the car is tits. It would mop the fking track with any early 911S. You could disconnect a spark plug and let 1/2 the air out of the tires and it would still win. So there's that, too. Yeah, I'm tired of him.

JCF 02-18-2008 03:08 PM

You seem to have a good dose of hate there too...
What Paul said sure didn't seem to merit your response - and your chip is showing in your response to my post as well.
You certainly don't jump on everyone that says something you find offensive.
Having a bad day ?

speeder 02-18-2008 03:39 PM

Look, I'm sorry for getting PO'ed on this thread. I'm especially sorry to Rob. I do have a temper about certain things, and this would be one of them. Paul's comment, along with his permanent comment in his signature line, (in the same size type as the rest of the response), was highly inappropriate IMO. Some others feel the same way, you're free to take it differently.

Did it ever occur to you, (or PWD), that Rob might have been planning on sharing this thread and the responses with his Dad? And the first response says some stupid, outdated schit from 1958 about "putting radiators in front not very intelligent"...

Whatever, dude. Maybe you need a cup of STFU as well. The new owner of this (phenomenal) car is an 86 y.o. WW2 fighter pilot, (judging by his age), most of the posters here would have to stand on a chair to kiss his ass. He might know a thing or two about physics and what makes a car great, as well. I pick my battles, and don't relish going at it with PWD, who use to be my friend, but this was just mean and small-minded and I'm sick of it.

Mean people suck. Nice people have nothing to worry about with me.

JCF 02-18-2008 03:51 PM

You can pass the bottle of STFU after you pour yourself a glass.

I agreed the old man did good, and I agree that he deserves all the respect in the world.
Those guys are my heroes and I tell that to every one of them I meet.

I am still not getting what has you all spitting mad.
Hard to imagine his Dad getting offended b Paul posting "an early 911S" , and I would say that Pauls/ Ferry's quote is hardly an attack

Dixie 02-18-2008 04:36 PM

Wow... This thread took a twist....

Let’s try this instead.

How about I tell y'all just a touch about the ol' man.
  • Grew up in Philly.
  • Had a new car every year during the depression.
  • Did basic flight training in '43. (Coincidently it was in Camden, SC. The field is about a mile from my house.)
  • Soloed out of an airfield that is now the CMP racetrack.
  • His aviation career spanned biplanes to supersonic jets. ("You determine the landing speed of a PT-17 by listening to the wires between the wings.")
  • He flew combat in three wars. (WWII, Korea, and 'Nam.)
  • Awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and many other honors.
  • Piloted airplanes his entire 30 year career in the service.
  • Favorite car owned? I suspect it would be the ’67 TR4A he bought after returning from 'Nam. He tweaked the heck out of that car. I remember it quite well.

Here's a photo of him 40 years ago. In the photo he's younger than I am now. And had already done so much....

Great photo.
Of a Great American Hero.

If he pissed on this thread, then you have pissed, squatted, swirled a big steaming pile, stood back up and started piss'n again. --sheesh.

Seriously, I can't believe that you would piss on a thread like this. We all know your hatred for modern Porsches, frankly it's really tiresome and boring. Most of us here are real enthusiasts, not members of a cult. If Ferry Porsche were alive, he'd have no time for you and he'd absolutely love this old guy.

Hear, hear!! Speeder, I'm glad someone else said it. Paul, stop pissing all over the board with your "issues". Sorry the world ain't like it was in 1972. Evolve, go with it, or leave. But the bitter old man routine is REALLY tiresome.

Naw, speeder just saw that comment for what it was...Paul being Paul. An inncuous comment to most, but to regular readers, the typical shot across the bow at anything newer than 1972....when people flashed headlights on the way to whatever the PCA did back then....

JCF 02-18-2008 05:09 PM

Sorry, if simply saying "Early 911S" got you ladies all worked up then things must get pretty ugly pretty often there at the knitting circle.

Yeah, I can see where a pilot of early jets might like a machine based on mechanicals rather than electronics. But maybe having the throttle hook to a computer is appealing and will help keep him out of trouble. The ride in the newer p-cars is cushier, power steering, abs brakes... Maybe this is just like a Cadillac from the perspective of an old ex-pilot.

Bad ass indeed! Hope he enjoys his new ride!

RWebb 02-18-2008 08:21 PM

That's Great! Tell him 'hi' for me and for all the other posters here.

911Rob 02-18-2008 08:41 PM

Great Photo!!! thanks!
Your Dads a Hero in my books.

My personal thanks for all his service.
I can't imagine how he managed to drive a new car every year during the depression though?
Not too many men of his caliber today.
Your obviously very proud, you sure have some 'big boots' to fill there Captain!

jwhcars 02-18-2008 08:47 PM

Tell your Dad congrats on his new toy and a big thank you for his service.

Rikao4 02-19-2008 06:24 AM

Nah, he'd probably be safer in a stock 1982 SC that understeers like a pig and is slower than a Honda minivan. With smaller brakes. No, he wants to go fast. He got the right car.
