Tonight should be interesting, moon, sky stuff

Tonight would be a big night if we were still beating drums at Stonehenge.

Tonight at 9:26pm CST will be the midpoint of the full lunar eclipse.

4 minutes later at 9:30 CST will be the full moon.

At the same time, the Navy plans to shoot down that spy satellite.

That's just too much stuff happening at once.

How cool would it be if the satellite was shot down in front of the eclipsed red moon. I'm pretty sure the satellite is going to be over the Pacific, so that probably rules that out.

Of course, none of this matters since it's completely overcast here.

Clear sky's and 8 below here. Should be an amazing sight.

A full lunar eclipse is spooky. Blood red light bathing everything.

The weather is going to block my view tonight. This is the reason I lost interest in astronomy. I would spend hours planning a session of observing and get screwed by the weather most of the time. It got so disgusting that I sold my telescopes.

Damn. Wish I had the Celestron C90 that I'm shopping for.

Mule 02-20-2008 10:05 AM

Oh no! The dragon's going to eat the moon!

A relative of mine is in the Navy - piloting a C140 or some equivalent electronics-laden plane photographing and tracking the shoot-down. I imagine the folks in the International Space Station hope the targeting folks can keep the two space objects separate.

May be rain here, too bad.

djmcmath 02-20-2008 05:53 PM

Mostly overcast here. If it was a little warmer, I'd be ok hanging out watching for the eclipse through the openings in the clouds. Unfortunately, it's cold enough that waiting 20 minutes for a glimpse is just not worth it. Aargh.

I can see it right now!

We have a Nexstar 130. It would be great but we're too wimpy to brave the 7 degree viewing weather. Brrrrrr!

LeeH 02-20-2008 07:19 PM

Overcast in Phoenix... looks like it's going to break up in an hour or so. Grrr.
