Its been a long year. So I need a new ride.

So the short is, I got divorced last august, Got all that paid off. Got moved into a new place Got my bills including rent under 500 a month.

All was good till Sunday.

Sunday I showed a Cavalier a Jeep is way tougher. I hit it right behind the rear wheel, doing ~40. I almost cut it in 1/2. Everyone walked away, and I'm insured of course.

The jeep is still drivable. Even the lights still work Except a few disquieting things. The 3 spoke steering wheel use to point the bottom spoke right at the boys, now it points right out the driverside window. Not good.

It was my fault, and I just had liability. I don't trust the jeep for free way driving right now. I went to the bank to see what they can loan me. I'm setting a limit of ~15K, but I think its time for a Porsche again.

So What should I get?

To help you all understand me this is what I look like. Thats 6'8, and 360 pounds. I use to own a 914. I loved it, but never really fit in it.



For the car.

I have a garage space. it will be garaged. I have some experience working on cars. I hate to do it when I have to, don't mind when I am doing it for fun. I live less than 400 yards from work. so if it goes bad, I can walk to work. Infact I'm planning on doing that so I don't door ding the Porsche.

I want the car for road trips. Regular usage. I am dating a girl that lives 45 minutes away. Got to be able to get to her when I want to of course. I'm planning on joining the local Porsche club. Miller Motorsports just built a big facility down the road. I want to go to that.

So what should I get? I can spot a plan ticket, I don't know what its going to be like getting my bank to see a ride thats far away though. What do you guys advice?

He'd like advice on a car, can afford a plane ticket to buy one out of state, but doesn't know how to finance if it's not local.

Yes, Phred is right. I can fly somewhere, I am not certain how to do the financing through something far away.

I would talk to the bank and get pre-qualified for what you can afford. Then when it's time to buy you just write the check and call the bank and they put the funds in your account. I don't know where your credit stands, but you probably can't borrow more than KBB or NADA book list as loan value so remember that as you are writing the check.

try Capital One auto finance--they have a blank check feature. That how I bought my 911.

I did talk to the bank. I am prequalified for 15K. I could prolly get a little more, but I asked the prequalify for 15K, that being what I'm most comfortable paying off, over the next 4 years.

+1 Capital One. You'll have a blank check in hand in as soon as 48 hrs. If you're buying private party they may want to wait until the check clears before signing over the title or letting you drive off with the car.


400 yards to work - must be nice. I'd walk. No idea on what type of car to recommend but you can get a 911 sc/carrera for $15K. Big upgrade from a 914 I can't imagine being 6'8" 360 lbs - wouldn't you be more comfortable in a larger American car/truck? Have you put on weight since the divorce?

They are all tight. Even most of the American Cars. I'd really like to get back to the Porsche though.

Nope, actually losing weight. Hitting the gym 3 times a week now.

Hey Hawk - he's referring to the cartoon character (wearing armor) you're standing next to.

I'll bet Capitol One will also beat your local bank interest rate and they will (or at least did when I used them) lend on any age used car. Some banks won't lend on used cars more than 6-8 years old.

Hey Hawk,
The good news for you is that Germans tend to run into the XL and up range as well, so most German cars will accommodate large sized bodies better than most ricers for example...

If you can finda nice SC or Carrera non-sunroof coupe, you will probably fit, or at least will be able to drop the seat rails, and move them rearward so that you can fit. Those are pretty nice cars, and can be in your price range if you can stand some higher miles. Most of the SC / Carreras can go well over 100K miles reliably if the oil has been changed regularly and they have not been other wise abused.

Have you sat in a 911? You might want to try one on for size before buying. You might also want to try a 944 or a BMW 3 series.

old MB might be good. I have a guy that works for me that is 6'7 and he fits in my 500E fine.

Yes I have sat in Several 911, The problem is that I sometimes fit great. Others not so much. I sat in a 68, and drive it fine, a 70, not so good. I tried a 85 on for size, not so good, but a 89 with no sunroof, was good.

Its a case by case basis. Generally, no sunroof though!
